Digital camera reviews of Samsung DVD-1080P7 Up-Converting 1080p DVD PlayerDigital camera Review: Excellent upconverter at low price Summary: 5 Stars
Recently bought 1080p tv and wanted to see if an upconverter made a difference.
This unit is easy to use and one can see a major difference. Note: a relative
has a 720p tv and this unit upconverts pictures to 1080 I. The manual says it
does and it actually works to improve dvd disks, even on 720p tv sets.
Digital camera Review: Extremely frustrating auto reset features and glitches Summary: 2 Stars
This dvd player was cheap and I got what I paid for, I guess. The player has several annoying issues as follows:
- When watching TV shows on dvd, the aspect ratio keeps auto changing to widescreen even while watching the shows non stop. You cannot save the menu settings you are currently watching.
- When you change channels and return to the dvd, aspect ratio and HDMI resolution often change automatically and you have to go to the player menu to redefine what you want. Also, it often goes to blue screen or static and you have to turn it off and back on to correct.
- Often gives a No Disc error when swapping out discs, even on brand new discs. You have to turn it off and back on to correct.
Digital camera Review: Failed after 6 weeks, but warranty service was good Summary: 1 Stars
I previously posted an unfavorable review because my player broke down after a few weeks of light use. Here's an update on my experience getting it fixed under warranty. (I don't seem to be able to change my 1-star rating, but I would change it to 4 stars if I could).
1. First call to customer service apparently rolled to an overflow team in India. Good -- a live person without waiting on hold. She walked me through a series of unsuccessful diagnostics, started a service request ticket, and asked me to try using a lens-cleaner disc on the unit. I bought one (a CD with tiny brushes embedded in the surface), but it did not help.
2. Called back with results. The rep asked me to send proof of purchase to the Samsung U.S. support center, then call back in 2 days. I printed and faxed a copy of my Amazon order.
3. Third call (2 days later) was answered by a rep who seemed to be in the U.S. He promptly emailed me a printable prepaid UPS shipping label.
4. I boxed up the player and dropped it along with the shipping label at the local UPS store.
5. Next day (Feb 19, 2008) I got an email from Samsung saying the unit had been received and scheduled for repair.
6. Next email, on March 6, wanted feedback about the results of my repair. I took this as positive sign. Sure enough, another email the same day said the repair was completed. Samsung also left a voice message on my phone, wanting to know the status.
7. UPS delivered the repaired player on March 7, and it seems to be in good working order.
Considering that I bought this player as a cheap way to enjoy my HDTV while waiting for the high-def DVD format war to end, Samsung Customer Service did a commendable job. Now that peace has come, I will definitely consider a Samsung blu-ray player.

Updated: June 2009. Whatever they fixed in the warranty service did the trick. The unit has performed flawlessly ever since.
Digital camera Review: Finally, a player I can live with! Summary: 5 Stars
I've been looking for a new, inexpensive DVD player for many months now, but everything I tried had problems I couldn't live with. This one seems to be a winner. Picture quality is excellent (HDMI) and sound quality is noticeably better than the other players I've tried (Oppo 981, Toshiba SD-5000, Panasonic DMR-EZ27K).
Just as important, it has some key features that many players do not have, such as multiple "screen fitting" options (there are 4), disc resume after power off, and quick on/off and disc loading.
The only negative I can think of so far is that the display only shows the time, not the chapter. This is only an annoyance when playing audio CDs, but the superb sound quality makes up for it. You just couldn't make it perfect, could you Samsung? Damn you!
The other player I was considering was the Sony NS75H. I'm sure it's fantastic (based on reviews), maybe even better than this one, but it only comes in silver, and I need black. This player looks pretty good for the price. It doesn't feel/look cheap like some other budget upconverting players.
I've been so tempted to go with HD-DVD, however, I think the lack of disc resume and the 30 second startup would drive me crazy. Also, I don't think the improvement in quality on a 42" screen is worth paying 3 times as much. I think the benefit of HD movies really shows on much larger screens. I'm going to wait until the 3rd of 4th generation of players is out next year.
UPDATE:
=======
I returned this unit due to an incompatability with my Westinghouse LCD. I had the same problem with the Samsung HD tuner box (scan line at the bottom of screen). I got the HD-A2 at a ridiculously low price on Amazon and I absolutely love it. I wouldn't even consider getting a DVD player now that I've seen HD. The 30 startup and lack of disc resume don't bother me one bit.
Digital camera Review: Finally, one that works as advertised. Summary: 4 Stars
The situation is this: DVD Players are made to fail, and are disposable. I've purchased three in the last 18 months. This one, although I've only had it for two days, is finally delivering what I need. All the other ones had multiple problems. Most notably was the freezing and skipping during playback, but also lack of real DivX support. This plays all of my AVI's, and hasn't skipped once-yet. (even with blank DVD media) It also has a bookmark feature and a resume function, as long as you don't turn the power off. Not bad for $90. Don't get excited about the upscaling feature. Your DVDs will not look better, it's a sham. It's not bad looking either.
