Digital camera reviews of Samsung DVD-1080P7 Up-Converting 1080p DVD Player

Digital camera Review: Good for price but lacks good DivX support
Summary: 4 Stars

I had been researching through Amazon reviews and the AVS forums for a good upscaling DVD player. I have a Samsung 56" 1080P DLP with the Faroudja chip. So I had to rule out buying my first choice, the Oppo DV-981HD. Apparently, both these use the Faroudja chip so it causes bad macroblocking. So my decision came down to the Samsung DVD-1080P7 or the Oppo DV-970HD. I bought the Samsung because it costs less, is 1080P, and has a better looking design.

I got the Samsung player a couple of weeks ago and was impressed by the picture from a DVD. Some DivX clips looked great, but some were pretty noisy or didn't upscale correctly. Some didn't even play. To Samsung's credit, it did play more DivX clips than my older Philips DVP642. So I decided to return the unit and take a chance on the Oppo.

The Oppo didn't have a significantly better DVD picture. But the DivX pictures were great and it has played every DivX clip I've put in there. Even though the Oppo player doesn't have the best looking design and costs more, I am still satisfied with it.

If you want a player that is under $100 and only watch DVDs, then I recommend the Samsung. If you watch DivX also and have $150 in your budget, then I recommend the Oppo DV-970HD.

Digital camera Review: Good player but it froze on me
Summary: 3 Stars

Player does not play VCD discs. Had an episode when the maching froze and i had to unplug it to restart. Did not want to take anymore chances so returned it. Ended up with the Panasonic DVD S53, see my review of it.

Digital camera Review: Good player but lacks Divx support
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this player about 3 months ago but needed to return it due to the lack of Divx support and some spotty playback issues.

Digital camera Review: Good player for the price
Summary: 5 Stars

Got it along with a Samsung HL-T6187S. The picture quality is very good, but upscaling certainly does not make mediocre source material look good. I would give the DVD player a slight edge over the scaling done in the TV, with the same DVD played in a standard DVD player.

Fortuantely I have not had any of the freezing problems so far. Loading time has been also quite reasonable -- no more than 3-5 seconds.

This player is probably not an essential item, at least for this TV, but I am glad that I got it.

Digital camera Review: Good player for the price but machine hang up several times
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased a 46" Sharp 1080P TV not too long ago, so I was in the market for a capable player to show the full potential of my TV. I found this player in Amazon and was captured by its price and good review from other people, though I had OPPO in my mind for long time. $89.99 is not a bad price for an interim DVD player before anyone win out the format war and price of next gen player starts to drop.
The product came in quickly with Amazon. I hooked it up with HDMI cable using 1080P output and coaxial digital output to Outlaw receiver using Bitstream without compression. The TV set to 1080P dot by dot mode. I carefully calibrate the TV with THX Optimizer. The picture came out very beautiful and smooth. I didn't see much of jagged line, artifacts or noise. I played couple different DVDs through the machine then I ran into several hang up/ freeze up problem. I cannot even turn it off with remote or switch in the front bazel. I have to unplug it and restart. It's really annoying especially in the middle of movie when you pause it or fast forward/ backward then it hangs.
I guess I will return this unit and probably purchase OPPO DV-981HD. However, for the picture quality and price/ value ratio I'd give it a 4 star rating.
