Digital camera reviews of Samsung DVD-1080P8 1080p Upconverting DVD PlayerDigital camera Review: Locks up!! Had to unplug to reset!! Summary: 2 StarsI was really eager to receive this DVD player once I ordered it. The upconverting was a feature that I was very interested in having. The HDMI connectivity was another plus.
This unit locked up on me several times and would not respond to any remote or front panel buttons, no matter how long they were held. Eventually I found the only way out of the lock up was to unplug the unit. The power strip for my setup is sandwiched behind the entertainment stand is really not accessible. Getting to the plug to disconnect it was a real pain. Perhaps it was a 'handshake' issue with the HDMI connection, but it was connected to a Samsung plasma. That shouldn't happen.
This unit is routinely on sale locally for just around $50. Amazon's price is high.
I would give the unit a 1 but the fact that when it did work it worked very well merits at least a two. Maybe I was unlucky but on top of the problems with the lock ups, the unit felt very cheap.
In the end, Amazon accepted the unit for return. I am back on the hunt for a different player. Amazon rocks!!!
Digital camera Review: Samsung DVD-1080P8 Summary: 4 StarsPicture is excellent, easy to set up, very nice finish. Wish remote control was lighted as it is impossible to see in a dark room.
Digital camera Review: Samsung, Will You Marry Me? Summary: 4 StarsIt's no wonder Samsung is leading the pack in HD technology.
I bought one of these Upcoverting DVD players in May 2008, and loved it so much I just bought another for my other bedroom.
Pros
Upcoverting is very noticeable on a HD television. Movies are better, sharper, and awesome.
Easy to Use
Price
Size - Sleek enough to fit in a small area under my televisions
Samsung's Link feature makes the player even easier to use if you've got a Samsung TV. I have a Samsung LCD and a Hitachi Plasma, and they both work great with this player.
Cons
After turning on the player, my TVs seem to need a minute before they recognize the player is one and switch to HDMI input. Slightly annoying sometimes, but not a deal breaker.
Player does NOT come with a HDMI cable
Overall I'm really happy with this product and will continue to buy Samsung products in the future if they keep making ones like this.
Digital camera Review: painfully slow and unresponsive Summary: 2 StarsI have several Samsung monitors and a Samsung HDTV, which I love. I figured I'd get the Samsung DVD player for its interoperability (and up-converting, of course).
I've used it for 6 months and will be getting a replacement for Christmas.
Pros: good video
Cons: unbelievably slow: 20 seconds to boot and open, another 20 to close and load. Remote responsiveness is very poor and, get this, the fast-forward options are 2X, 4X and 64X! Fast-fowarding 2 minutes requires either 30 seconds or 2 seconds. The "2" would be fine if the remote responded but, since it doesn't, you more often shoot WAY past your target. In short, fast-forwarding is very painful.
Digital camera Review: Good product Summary: 4 StarsThis DVD player is excellent when paired to a good HD tv. The video Quality is very near that of Blue Ray. The only negative thing I have to say is that the remote response and menu navigation is very slow. Though, this is very tolerable given the quality of the picture. Over all, I would buy this again.
