Digital camera Review: VHS player failed in 6 months - ate tape, not worth repairing
Summary: 1 Stars

Re Samsung DVD V9700/XAA DVD/VCR combo, purchased 2008 Feb., $99, at Circuit City:
We usually played DVDs and only rarely played VHS cassettes on this unit. After only six months it ate a tape. More precisely, suddenly the VHS cassette won't play, rewind, ff, or eject. At power on, it says "HI", and then the door partly opens and closes, then it says "L2". When I push eject, sometimes it tries to eject, and some of those times the door opens partly and closes again. I unplugged and waited but the processor did not reset. Samsung Technical Support representative said "It appears that something else inside the player is malfunctioning. Unfortunately this is not an issue to be resolved via Live Chat. The DVD player needs to be examined by a professional service technician to get it serviced to fix the issue." The thing is out of warranty for labor, and a VCR repairman told me it's at least $40 to get the cassette out and about $80 to repair - not worth it. So buy some other unit!

Digital camera Review: Whoops! It won't record DVDs!
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this because I thought it would help convert my VHS tapes to DVD. I doesn't! It only records on VHS, it won't write DVDs. Don't make the same mistake. I'm sure it's a good unit, but it may not do what you are looking for.

Digital camera Review: Works great here...
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been using this unit for over 3-years now, with no hint of an issue. It amazes me how many bad reviews this thing has. I had purchased this on clearance at a local WalMart for a whopping $35 (had a special 50% off on clearance priced items for a half-hour), and have not regretted it one bit.

This unit is used in the kids play room, has taken it's share of abuse from them, and is used fairly frequently. Despite all of this, it continues to work flawlessly, just as it did the day it was brought home. I'm very happy with the player, and at the price I paid, it was a steal!

Maybe I just got lucky?

Digital camera Review: Works great!
Summary: 4 Stars

In August 2007, our old DVD/VCR combo quit about the same time I bought an HDTV. I looked into upconverting players and discovered this one. The first player would not work on the HDMI cable (deduct one star). The regular VHS output and component outputs worked fine. I called Amazon who immediately shipped another player. This player has worked great ever since then.

The upconverter with an HDMI cable is a noticeable improvement over the regular DVD player with component cables. I definitely recommend this player to anyone with a high-def TV.

Digital camera Review: Works just fine (thus far!)
Summary: 5 Stars

Works just fine for my purposes: playing DVDs and VHSs on an older non-HD TV via the standard RCA plugs. It is tunerless, so you can't record from broadcast. I was a bit concerned about quality of these devices from reading the reviews--there are plenty of bad ratings for ALL products of this type, even when accounting for the fact that unhappy consumers are more likely to post reviews. My last one (a Sylvania) lasted two years before its early demise, so I am working on the assumption that these things are basically junk, regardless of the brand, so you shouldn't pay too much for them. With such low expectations, I am perfectly happy with it... so far!!
