I've had this set for about a month now and I couldn't be happier with it. It required very little tuning right out of the box. After researching comparible lcd's, this samsung is the best of the bunch. I would direct anyone on the fence about buying this tv to check out the review at [...]
Digital camera Review: A best bang for the buck choice Summary: 5 Stars
First of all, I bought this TV from Amazon several weeks ago for a hundred dollars more and just got a refund on the difference. So you can feel very secure that you're getting a good price from Amazon. Other than that, the TV was a little slow in arriving (9 days to Chicago), but it was free shipping so what do you expect?
As far as the TV itself, the best thing by far is the picture. I haven't even properly calibrated my TV yet and it looks great. Standard def looks much better and HD looks simply incredible. You've got tons of connections on the back and I don't see myself running out of spaces to plug things soon. The InfoLink feature is a neat addition. I've got my TV hooked up to a wireless bridge and I'm able to check the weather at the push of a button.
A couple of things to keep in mind though. If you plan to wall mount this (as I did) make sure you have a long philips screwdriver. The TV comes with the stand already attached and the screws are very deep. Secondly, be aware that the PIP on this TV is practically useless since one of your sources has to be an HDMI or component source and even then you may only view analog channels on the other source. Other than those minor details, I've no complaints.
Digital camera Review: A clear winner Summary: 5 Stars
The TV: unbelievable! Coupled with HD channels, it totally changed my TV viewing experience. I spent so much time watching it, so much so that one of my new year resolution is, guess what, to watch less TV.
Amazon: always delivers. Great buying experience.
Delivery: Pretty good.
Digital camera Review: A gem to behold Summary: 5 Stars
Waited a long time before replacing a SONY 17inch color TV purchased in 1974. No blur movement, deep contrast, beautiful finish on case. You will want to run the audio through external speakers or an audio home theatre system as the speakers do not do justice to this visual gem of a TV. Very glad I went with the 52 inch model as it intially appeared large for my room but now I cannot wait to watch programs on the large screen. The delivery went without any hiches and drop off date was arranged for a mutually convenient time by very polite, courteous delivery staff. Been up and running for 2 months and absolutely problem free. Very pleasant experience from purchase to viewing. Would purchase a large TV from Amazon again without any hesitation. Got a great price and fast, competent delivery.
Digital camera Review: A good LCD . . . a few problems. Summary: 3 Stars
Although this is not directly related to the performance of the product; it was part of the selling point through Amazon. I'm referring to the so called white glove service. It seems when it was time for my Samsung to be delivered, absolutely none of the advertising points were followed. To be more precise, I did not receive an advance notification for the delivery, it just arrived without any prior notice, only a knock on the door (I was in the shower). Only one individual arrived and then implied that he'd need help moving the package, he originally only wanted to drop it off (in my garage) and leave, he refused to check the TV by plugging it in, saying he was only doing what he was told. Of course I contacted the original shipper and he indicated that procedure was not followed (Hmmmm . . .I'm wondering who sent one individual?). Anyway . . .I contacted Amazon and they basically indicated that was not normal and they would pass on my complaint. I guess that was suppose to appease me.
Ok . . . as far as the TV itself. I received the Samsung before Direct TV installed my HD package. I have always had an additional over the air antenna which I used for locals in the event of a satellite failure, so I thought I'd try it to see how local HD was. The HD image that I received was impressive.
Another thing I'd like to mention is that Samsung has some features that they advertise as cutting edge, which I really question. The DNIe which is suppose to be cool appears to be nothing more than the picture turned on to vivid with most features turned to high . . . go figure. Is it worth the additional bucks . . .probably not.
The remote is another story. It simply sucks. It has one of those wheels like an ipod and it seemed I was always doing a function more than once. I have several items attached to my home theatre and when I go to source to change functions the remote invariably starts another function that was not intended due to the wheel sensitivity. Most of the menu items that you'd use has an extend feature which you have to hit the enter button. Well, if you inadvertently move the wheel which is extremely sensitive to touch, you wind up either canceling what you were about to do or find yourself in another unrelated feature. Anyone that is satisfied with this remote has simply never experienced one that works well, such as the MX-500 which is older technology but is still available and can control up to ten devices and has a better range than most remotes. I transferred the functions to a MX-500 and was a happy camper again.
The frame edge and other plastic parts seem to be made of a material which can be scratched by a fly landing harder than normal (ok, an exaggeration). When dust collects, which it will in time and you make an attempt to dust, it will scratch the surface. I realize they give you a cloth but it really makes little difference.
Bottom line. . . . most people that make this purchase will ohhh and ahhh, however I'm being realistic. I have no idea if other tv's have these shortcomings because most people wouldn't admit it if they did, instead they like to convince themselves they made a smart purchase. The television is ok . . .probably better than most but certainly not without faults. Would I buy the same unit again knowing what I know? I'll let you know in about 3 years. By the way, I bought the Samsung 1500 DVD player and it has never worked properly, even though the company sent me two firmware upgrades, which it simply spit out. Sometimes it works . . . . sometimes not. Depends on the barometric pressure I guess. Anyway, I'll be sending it back soon and would suggest that people shy away from this product for a while. It needs a bit of work.
