Digital camera Review: Good drive at a great price

I got this external dvd writer for my wife's ASUS 1000he netbook. It is a good size, neither larger than it should, nor the slimest product out there. It feels solid, but not heavy, and is very functional. It does not require an AC adapter, but does come with 2 USB connections to make sure you can get enough juice to run it. We have had no issues running it on one. I highly recommend this drive for this price.

My wife used this drive with her ASUS for about the past year and half or two years, and has since upgraded her computer to a Mac. I travel, so have got a smaller laptop (no internal drive) and taken this Samsung over. This is an outstanding CD/DVD drive. It is light, relatively compact (enough so to travel), and fast, fast. Not the quietest perhaps, but not bothersome either.
This is a workhorse that looks like it has more years left in it than most all the laptops I will be hooking it up to over the years ahead.

I like this drive. Works good. I think the price is good too. Slim size and doesnt need to be plugged into ac outlet makes it very portable. Unlike what many confused people think it doesnt need to use 2 usb ports in most cases.
If you have usb version 2.0 then you only need to plug one of the usb connectors in and it works fine.
If you have older usb that doesnt put out enough voltage then you can still use it by plugging in both usb connectors to your pc. That is why the second connector is present - to get more power if needed.
I think it will work with usb hubs that are plugged into ac outlet but not ones that dont have a power adapter because they dont have enough juice to power the unit once the usb has been split to multiple ports. At least it works with the hub on my desktop that has ac adapter. The same is true with my usb hard drive also so I think this is to be expected with any device that gets its power through the usb cable as opposed to a seperate ac power cord.
Nero software has issues with some computers. It is a free bundled software with the unit so while I am disappointed that it doesnt work with one of my 2 computers its not a real big deal. Also, I cant blame samsung that dvd burning software like roxio and nero costs so much if I want to go buy it. That would be like blaming hp or dell or some pc mfr that adobe cs4 costs more than double what my pc cost... I am just happy an external dvd drive is so cheap.

I purchased this to use with my new netbook. Samsung was the cheapest external drive available and so far it has worked well. I need to use only 1 USB port even though it comes with a dual USB cable.
