Digital camera reviews of SanDisk 2 GB Cruzer Micro ( SDCZ6-2048-A10, Retail Package)

Digital camera Review: Deceived !!
Summary: 2 Stars

The Ultra3 software that auto launches from this USB drive does indeed install software on every pc you plug it into. It does not ask before installing. It automatically launches when you plug it in and creates a c:\documents and settings\user\application data\u3 subdirectory. This directory does not disappear when the device is ejected. This was confirmed by SanDisk Tech Support after they told me it left no trace initially. For me this is unacceptable as I use it on PCs that are not my own. When the drive is plugged in it creates a CD drive and a removable drive. The CD drive is where U3 software auto launches from. To stop it from auto launching you have to get rid of the CD partition. That tool is not provided by SanDisk but if you look around on th internet you can find it. The RAM is this drive is also very slow.

Digital camera Review: Decent Drive, But Keep Your Earlier Ones
Summary: 3 Stars

It's a decent enough drive that gets the job done, but it seems like the previous generation of cruzer micro was a lot nicer. I got this to replace a previous one, the aluminum model with a cap instead of a retractable plug, which I lost. They seem to have replaced sturdy aluminum with flimsy plastic. The retractable plug is nice, but it feels very fragile. Extending it sometimes feels like it hasn't quite locked in place, and every time I plug it in I have a slight fear it will break in my hand. There is a titanium model that claims to be sturdier but I haven't tried it. If it is sturdier, I would recommend that.

Some people like the U3 software but I found it extremely annoying. Not the fact that they install it in the first place, but the fact that it is almost impossible to uninstall. Macs don't support it, but you can only uninstall it from a PC. Every time you plug it in it appears as two volumes, and it wastes 60mb on your drive.

It is also wider than previous models of cruzer mini. Despite what the manufacturer states, I found that it was just wide enough that I could only barely plug it in next to my mouse on my laptop.

It is nice enough though. It is small and holds a lot of data. If you have an earlier model that you're considering upgrading, think twice about it.

Digital camera Review: Decent Price - Ok product
Summary: 4 Stars

Great price for 2 GB of memory. The casing is a cheap plastic...not very durable, but good enough for sharing data at home.

Digital camera Review: Decent USB Flash Drive if you can get it on sale.
Summary: 3 Stars

I got this item on sale from a local store, and for the size of the storage, it is a good deal. These things used to be very expensive, and for a 2 GB drive, the price has gone down considerably. Kiss your old floppy disks goodbye--USB Flash Drives are the wave of the future. They use your computer's USB drives as a means to move data to store on this drive.

The SanDisk brand is a good solid name, so I decided to give this little drive a go. The packaging it comes in is ridiculous. You have to cut all around the outside of the drive, and closer to it than normal to open it. Once you make it through the casing, then you can appreciate it better. This drive does not have a cap like most; it comes with a slider that extends the tip of the USB so that you can plug it into the computer, and retracts when you don't need it. The idea is great, but the reality is mediocre. The slider causes the USB tip to retract when you are trying to insert it into the USB port. That means that it is harder to get into the port properly. And the tip is not well-protected from dust and dirt.

A nice feature is that the area where the slider is lights up when it is in the port. It isn't particularly useful, but it is neat. It does come with a lanyard that is easy to connect the drive to, and it has a part that disconnects from the drive, so you don't have to take it off your neck when you want to insert it.

The thing that really knocks this USB drive down for me is the U3 software. It is a great idea, really. It does have some neat features. You can encrypt the data on it, you can run programs right from the drive and keep them synchronized with the ones on your computer. The problem is that this little program goes on autorun everytime you insert it into your computer, and you don't have a say so in stopping it. This is fine if you only use a select number of private computers. But it can cause problems if you use computers across operating systems and platforms. I had a woman try to use this at the computer on my job (a public library), and she couldn't use the drive or access her files because the restrictions on the computer prevent users from running executable files for security (virus) reasons. She did not want to run a program, she just wanted to print her resume. She ended up out of luck, because there was no way to access her files without the program running.

You can get rid of the program if you go to the U3 provider's webpage and download the uninstall program. Then your drive will be a normal USB drive, and you can use it anywhere. I think that the option to install U3 should have been given to the user. No one should have to uninstall a program that came on the drive, because this may be a hassle to most users.

I find that without the U3 program, the drive is good. It is not as good as some of the other drives out there, but for what you need it for (storing and retrieving files), it works.

Digital camera Review: Disappointed
Summary: 1 Stars

I am very disappointed in the 512MB Cruzer Micro 2 I purchased recently. The Launch Pad system sucks. There is no way to disable it. Every computer I tried automatically installs the stupid Launch Pad that takes too long to install. It will crash some computers running windows 2000 and XP. It loads from a protected drive that is read only with no way to delete it. I lose 33 MB out of the 512 MB to this program. I paid for 512 MB not 479 MB. I only hope I can return it. I will not consider buying SanDisk products again.
