Used this in a pocket camera. I don't know the technical difference between this and the cheap cards. The practical difference is that even with a pocket camera (Canon IS870) write time is significantly faster.
With the bargain card, time between shots is significantly longer than with this card.
I was skeptical, and bought one of these and one of the cheapies. The better quality does seem to be worth the additional $$. Also came with a nice little pouch-- easier to keep track of it.

Do yourself a favor, Buy the Extreme III 2 GB SD Memory Card. These cards write extremly fast and will give you hundreds of high quality pictures. I am using mine in a new Canon SD750 and it also Increses how much video time I can record. Excellent Item, make yourself happy, Buy this Card!
