Digital camera reviews of SanDisk Sansa Clip 4 GB MP3 Player (Silver)Digital camera Review: Display was dead on arrival Summary: 1 Stars
When I received this product, it was new and completely sealed in packaging. I opened it and found that the screen did not seem to display. I was able to connect it to my computer and add music files.
I followed online instructions to navigate blindly to the brightness settings and turn them all the way up, but still couldn't see anything on the display. I finally took the Clip into a 100% dark closet and after my eyes adjusted, I was able to make out very faintly what was displayed on the screen.
I contacted Sansa through contact information on their website and received no response. I waited for a response until my return window with Amazon approached, then I returned the product to Amazon for a refund.
In reading online reviews and support forums, it appears that display problems with this device are not unheard of -- some said their Clip was dead on arrival, some said the screen stopped working suddenly for no apparent reason after weeks or months of use.
Digital camera Review: Disposable? Summary: 3 Stars
Overall a good player, but after a year and a half of use the battery has gone flat. Like any rechargeable battery it has reached the end of its life. However, with no supported way of replacing the battery this $50+ device is a throw-away. I don't like that very much at all.
Digital camera Review: Don't buy this for Audiobooks Summary: 2 Stars
Don't buy this for audio books unless you only plan to listen (and pay for) [...]audio books. After researching, reading forums and consulting others for almost 6 months, I finally took the plunge and purchased one of these primarily for listening to audio books since it was recommended as having a good bookmarking function, something missing from many other MP3 players. Unfortunately, no one mentioned that this function only works effortlessly with books downloaded from [...] and doesn't work at all with books downloaded from other sources, including those thousands of books offered free in my state from the public library. After searching on the web and reading hundreds of techie posts, I've found instructions on how to get the bookmarking function to work with non-audio books [...]; unfortunately, they involve downloading shareware to change metatags and other things a non-geek like me should never have to think about. It's interesting to note that Sansa, on a posting on their forum in 2007, said they were working on a fix for this problem. My guess is they have an agreement with Audible.com not to try too hard, since they haven't come up with a solution yet.
Digital camera Review: Don't count on the FM Radio Summary: 1 Stars
FM Radio stopped working after 1 month of occasional use. Also the Sansa Clip appears to have a relatively small playlist limit, i.e. no more than about 2 dozen playlists, whereby adding more than that results in some playlists showing as "Empty".
Digital camera Review: Don't miss the bonus! Summary: 5 Stars
I got a gift certificate for Christmas and decided to buy the Sansa Clip as an additional MP3 player for use in the car and boat. I use my iPod a lot, but this would be an extra - there when I needed it. I bought it with the idea that it would be a simple drag and drop player. Well, when it came, I was first shocked at how REALLY tiny it is. It weighs next to nothing, but has a nice bright display and intuitive controls. I didn't use the included installation CD, and just connected the mini USB cable to my computer and started dragging and dropping MP3 files. I did a bunch and then disconnected to listen to what I had. They came up fine on the player and sounded great. They retained the album information and I was happy.
The next day I decided to see what the installation disc was all about - that was when I found the real value for me. The installation disc just invites you to subscribe to the Rhapsody music service. I have loved Rhapsody for a number of years and use it all the time. Then I found the bonus - you can create, drag and drop your Rhapsody playlists onto the Sansa Clip - without purchasing the MP3's - you just "rent" them. That makes all of the music that Rhapsody has to offer available to take with you at any time - without buying it. Color me dum and late to the party, but I was blown away with this capability! Once you add them to the Clip, you have the music, album and track information, and even the artist bio. One caveat - Rhapsody "sees" the Clip as an extra computer, and Rhapsody only allows you to "authorize" 3 computers per subscription. I already had 3, so I had to de-authorize one in order to use the Clip.
The other features of the Clip also seem to work great. The FM radio was surprizingly clear and works well. I added a Rhapsody "Channel" and that work great, too. The included earbuds are OK, but a bit low on base, but that is no surprise. The build quality and features of the Clip are all first rate.
I also was reminded how much 4GB of music actually is. I put about 175 songs on the Clip and it says that it is 11.8 hours of music, and it is only about 1/3 full. Considering how easy it is to rotate playlists on this thing, why would you ever need more?
In summary, I am more than thrilled with the Sansa Clip and can't imagine a better digital music bargain.
