Digital camera reviews of SanDisk Sansa m230 512 MB MP3 Player (Blue)

Digital camera Review: A good MP3 player, especially with the low price
Summary: 4 Stars

This is my first MP3 player, and I was disapponted at first, but have gotten around that. The description says that it can hold either 120 songs MP3 or 240 songs WMA. I copy CDs to my computer at 48kbps WMA, so I can hold almost 400 songs. It can play WAV, WMA, MP3, subscription files, and even DRM-protected files. The player itself is bulky but light-most of the weight comes from the battery. The player takes one AAA battery, with 19 hours playback (although I haven't gotten mine past 14-16). Because it takes a AAA battery, there's no cables needed to lug around. The clear case that comes in the package is cheaply made, and scratches easily. Also, after using mine for just over a year, the backlight only turns on when it feels like it (even with full battery).

Pros:
Inexpensive
Plays most sound files (WAV, MP3, WMA, DRM, and subscription files)
Hard to accidentally turn on.
US, world, or Japan FM radio

Cons:
Few EQ settings
Sub-par backlight
Crappy earbuds and slip-over case provided.

Overall it's good, but there are better flash drive based players out there.

Digital camera Review: A good Mp3 player, but.........
Summary: 3 Stars

Its a good Mp3 player, and once it get even slightly smacked, its a dead Mp3 player, I got one of these "the square model, I forget the name" and that broke by being in my pocket when I fell, and I used my warrenty, and they gave me this, I had it for 2 days, and I dropped it by accident, and it was busted, so dont buy this if you think you might drop it, it is a good Mp3 player, but its too fragile.

Digital camera Review: A good mp3 player with an incredible price
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this mp3 player last year and till now, I'm still satisfied with its function. It can play music, radio, and record. Most importantly, it's cheap!

Digital camera Review: A great "starter player" that you can get for next to nothing
Summary: 5 Stars

I could not figure out what the big deal was about MP3 players.

People were happily spending hundreds of dollars for something that, while extremely cool looking, seemed to me like a glorified Walkman/Discman?

Somebody got me an M230 for my birthday, though, and it's changed my life. I'm literally listening to as much music now as I did when I was a teenager.

The Sandisk is lightweight, just slightly larger than a Bic cigarette lighter; it holds about six hours worth of music; and it has great sound.

The weight is perfect, easily shirt-pocketable, and you don't have to worry about jostling it at all. Using a car adapter, I was also able to play it while driving and it sounds great, even coming through my ratty car speakers.

And no, you can't put 1,000 songs on it -- only about 130. But I have such a huge music collection, I think I'd go crazy if I could put a massive chunk of it on my player. I actually find that if I put 100 songs on it, after about a week it's a lot of fun to go through and cull the stuff I don't listen to and add stuff I've either bought during the week or suddenly rememebered I wanted to hear. I like that it forces me to be a little selective.

Plus, the bottom line is that this is now selling for less than fifty bucks. If you're not into MP3 players, you can check it out for about the cost of three or four CDs. If you like it -- and you probably will, as have the people I've given this to as gifts -- you can always pay an arm and a leg for an iPod later.

Digital camera Review: A great alternative to that OTHER mp3 player

The SanDisk Sansa M230 512 MB MP3 Player

Last year as I was listening to my bulky CD Walkman, I kept seeing kids on the street with those tiny neon headphones on. That's the sign of an ipod user and a sign of the times. So, while I tried my best to save my money to buy one, I noticed that a local store had the Sandisk Sansa for an After-Thanksgiving Sale, so while others were standing in line at four in the morning to get an Xbox, I rushed in to get this Sansa.

If you can't afford an ipod yet and just want an mp3 player just to have an mp3 player (you can always upgrade later), I'd go with this one. True, it may not hold as many songs as an ipod but all I do is take the bus to work and drive any other time, so I don't need to listen to that many songs. Basically, I'm just fascinated with the mp3 player itself. With my CD Walkman, I have to use up two AA batteries in about 1 1/2 weeks while having to either listen to the same CD over and over or take a CD carrying case with me full of other CD's (which makes the Walkman even bulkier). With this, I can use one AAA battery for about 2-3 weeks and download about seven full-length albums on here. And it fits right in my pocket, always a plus.

There are a few cons: the headphones only last for about six months, when you "lock" the player by using the HOLD button, you hear static in the headphones, and the light isn't very strong, making it a pain to search for songs in a dark location (like on a red-eye flight). But you get what you pay for, I guess. I'll be "cool" someday and get an ipod or whatever else is in these days but for now, I'm happy with this Sansa. -EJR
