Digital camera Review: A Terrible MP3 Player - Don't Buy One!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I just received my second M240 as a replacement for the first one, which was defective. If I was lucky, I could get it to play -- only to have the volume control automatically turn the volume down after 3-4 seconds of play (almost like playing a CD in preview mode). I was SURE this was the one-in-a-million unit that was defective and didn't hesitate to call for a replacement (which Amazon replaced in two days). I was pleased with the player until I discovered that the "Select" button wouldn't bring up the playlist or add to favorites - which renders the player useless, in my opinion. So - my experience with the M240 has not been good at all.

I liked the look and feel of the unit as well as the way it fit in my shirt pocket, virtually weightless. I'm really disappointed in SanDisk and will not buy their products again. I will advise others to avoid buying this unit as well. It is an inferior/defective product -- don't buy one!!

Digital camera Review: A better user manual would be helpful
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this MP-3 player for my daughter and am generally happy with it. A couple of things that I wish I had known: 1. You need to select between the types of input on the player before your computer will recognize that you have attached it. 2. Do not purchase an iTunes card to buy music to place on an MP-3 player. It is a fairly nice MP-3 player, just a little difficult to figure out at first.

Digital camera Review: A fine MP3 Player, Reasonably priced
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had my SanDisk Sansa for close to a year now, and it hasn't let me down yet. It is easy to use, sounds great, and runs for many hours on a single AAA battery. At first, I was worried about the apparently flimsiness of the buttons, but they've worked well and show no signs of wear or trouble. The radio works great and tends to get better reception than my car radio. The audio recorder is little more than functional -- it saves your recordings as low-quality, mono WAV files. This is fine for recording reminders or even basic conversations if you needed some sort of record, but don't count on them for making podcasts or video voiceovers. Nevertheless, it is a solid audio player, and I've been pleased enough with mine to purchase two more as gifts for Christmas this year.

Digital camera Review: A good buy nonetheless

Purchased this after reading amazon.com reviews. Nice lower cost alternative to the iPod. However, the instruction manual is definitely barebones. You get just enough information to get started. Nothing more. I've seen warranties longer than this manual. My bluetooth has more comprehensive instructions!!! Also, have a spare USB cord available. My tower computer is on the floor. The USE cable that comes with this is so short, that to do anything, I had to get on my knees under my desk to work the device. The arm band that the device comes with is so-so. However, I'd prefer a belt clip But, I want it to play music at an otherwise dull desk job and it does that just nicely - once I figured out how to operate the thing. I'll probably get one for my 13 year old daughter.

Digital camera Review: A good cheap flash player
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm quite happy with my 1GB Sansa M240. It's a little clunkier in shape and size than some other MP3 players, but the price is good, the controls work well, and it's easy to load music.

The profile of the player is a bit different; the back is rounded rather than flat (to conform to the battery compartment) and the sides have a little step in them to accomodate more control buttons. In practice this hasn't been an issue for me, since it still fits in my jeans pocket comfortably. The included plastic case works well to protect the player and allows access to the controls and the USB connector (but not the battery compartment) without taking the player out of the case.

My previous flash player was a Creative Zen Nano. The Sansa definitely has better controls; the Nano basically just played songs by directory and displayed the file name, ignoring the ID tags in the song file itself. The Sansa, on the other hand, will automatically sort out songs into a hierarchy by artist and album, using the embedded ID tags rather than the directory structure to drive it. This means I can just copy a bunch of files into any directory on the Sansa, and it will organize them for me. Nice. No need for additional software (like iTunes) either; it's just a flash drive.

The controls are simple but effective: the usual play/pause, volume up/down, and skip back/forward things. A separate button gives access to menus for play modes (shuffle, repeat) and other stuff. These work well, and I've only rarely had a button get pushed in my pocket by accident (a problem with small players when you don't lock the controls all the time).

Battery life is good; I've been getting a few weeks on each AAA battery, with an average of an hour per day or more of use. The low-battery indicator hasn't been real helpful, though, as it seems to register 50-80% right up until the unit dies because the battery is gone. Not a big problem if you carry a spare battery, but you could be surprised sometimes.

I've used the FM feature only a little. It has the same problems as other flash players with FM, in that the selectivity is poor and there's a lot of static. Unlike other players I've seen, the Sansa uses the USB cable as an antenna, which probably improves the reception. I don't know because I don't carry the cable around with me when I'm using the player, though. They do supply a cute short little USB cable (about 4" long).

I have no strong opinions on the supplied earbuds, since I use some I already had. They seemed like ordinary earbuds.

Overall, I'm happy with this player. It remains to be seen how long it lasts (my Nano flaked out after about a year), and that will probably be the big determinant of how cost-effective this player is, but given the low price and good features, it's been a great deal so far.
