Digital camera reviews of Sangean RCR-1 Advanced Atomic Clock Radio (Classic Black)

Digital camera Review: Pretty, but...
Summary: 3 Stars

Beautiful clock and resets itself after every power loss, which is why I bought it. But has a couple of stupid characteristics, the first being so bright in a darkened room that you wonder what light you forgot to switch off. In addition, the numbers are too small to set the alarm. You can't see the damned numbers without buying some reading glasses and putting them on, not the activity you hope for when going to bed. Do designers use what they design? You know, to discover what they didn't think of?

Digital camera Review: Radio now in home office area !!!
Summary: 1 Stars

This radio was not cheap. A number of issues are associated with the radio, namely its poorly visible clock at night. It doesn't matter whether the lighting is at its brightest or dimmed, the clock is extremely difficult to read.
Another shortcoming is the instruction booklet. You need to be a "rocket scientist" to attempt to decipher the instructions.
Quality of the FM and AM sound -- excellent and that's why it is now located in the home office area where its soft blue glow can be seen. The old $29.95 alarm clock radio is now back on the night stand doing the job it's suppose to do !!!

Digital camera Review: Sangean RCR-1 Advanced Atomic Clock Radio
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the Sangean RCR-1 Advanced Atomic Clock for my husband for Christmas. It is without a doubt THE best present I have ever given him. He LOVES everything about it.

Digital camera Review: Sangean still makes a quality clock radio
Summary: 5 Stars

We wanted a new clock radio with an analog clock for ease of reading at night, but with full electronic features. This Sangean filled the bill with high quality and great functionality. The only other analog unit we found was a $200 Tivoli with great sound but few features.

The RCR-1 has all the bells and whistles plus a highy legible analog clock dial. A REAL clock...with hands! The radio synch with the NOAA atomic clock signal is a nice touch too. (This function can be turned off by those clever folks who set their alarm clock 5 minutes fast. Who do they think they're fooling anyway?)

I don't know what kind of problem the other reviewer had with the back lighting, but we think its just fine. Perhaps he didn't find the brightness adjustment knob. The display button on the front only switches between low and high...the fine adjustment's hidden on the bottom. We find the clock easily readable at the low setting from across a dark room. The digital display is a bit busy, but you'd usually look at it only when changing a setting.

The station presets are great feature if you go to sleep with the radio on...you can wake up to a different station. And the buttons are so much easier than fiddling with a tuning knob. The seven day selection for the alarm means no need to turn the alarm off/on on the weekend. As you'd expect from Sangean (a RADIO maker), the radio is superb in both AM and FM reception and it has a quality speaker and a tone control for nice rich sound.

Typical of so many electronic items, the controls necessary for the many functions are a bit complex; but since we only use the basic alarm and radio functions, thats not a big deal. The instructions are adequate though not very detailed.

Considering that most clock-radios sold today are so cheesy and cheap, this unit is well worth the price especially considering it'll probably give us many years of service.

Digital camera Review: Too bad about the backlighting...
Summary: 1 Stars

This clock radio has it all... almost. The Atomic clock synched right up, the sound is quite good, I like the "Nap" feature and the ability to set two alarms to two different times on each different day of the week is cool.

So, I set it all up and put in my bedroom and when it got dark I realized the radio was useless to me - no matter how you set the backlighting brightness display you have to get right on top of the clock to read the display. So trying to set the nap timer or the sleep timer or change the alarm settings, after dark, becomes almost impossible. When you turn up the brightness the numerals just stay the same and the backlighting just gets brighter and glares in your face.

The manual leaves a bit to be desired too and just ignores features like backup (which it seems to have because when you disconnect from power the clock continues to display and the setting are saved; I just have no idea how long and if that feature is something I can count on).

Bottom line is I would surely keep the clock if I could only read it at night.... but I can't; so back it goes. Too bad.
