Digital camera Review: "Humane Waking System" is Annoying Waking System
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this clock because I was hoping the "Humane Waking System" would give a gradual alarm. Something like a beep or two, followed by at least 15 seconds of silence, then slowly adding more volume and beeping. I used it one morning. It started with a few beeps, then just a few seconds later added more, and more and more. It was not much better than a typical jarring alarm clock. You get a few seconds to respond before it gets nuclear.

The other thing that displeased me was all the extra wires out the back. Three of them. There is the power cord, the antenna cord, then a cord for the atomic sensor. You can attach the sensor to the back but there is no "cord management" if you don't want to remove the sensor from the back. You can keep it in the cord tie and let it hang down in the back if you want but I would rather not have an extra cord in the back in a tie. Same with the other (AM/FM) antenna cord. Another reviewer here posted some good pictures of all three cords stretched out so if that works for you, don't worry about that feature.

Lastly, I just did not like the display. It is blue LCD with white (non-blue) to show the different icons and times. You can adjust the light level. You can view the display on the pictures here and it might not be a problem for you. I found it a bit cheap looking but that is a personal observation I guess.

Bottom line is the Annoying Waking System. Why can't someone sell an alarm that gives a few beeps and chills for a bit so people can know they are getting up and have a minute or two to think about it before the clock getting all loud and nasty?

If that feature does not matter to you, then this alarm might work for you. I was looking for a better engineered product because of that touted feature so this is going back. I really do not return many items. Annoying Waking System was not worth the price of this unit.

Digital camera Review: A Little Too Bright
Summary: 4 Stars

The clock functions well and reliably as advertised but has two features that are somewhat annoying. First is the backlight to the screen. Although it is adjustable, it still puts out a strong glow on the lowest setting. Second, the alarm clock settings cannot be temporarily switched off once they are set. If you have a day off, you'll either have to reset
that day or wake up at your usually time.

Digital camera Review: A great timekeeper but!
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this clock because of the radio link feature to synchronize time and auto adjust for daylight savings time. It provided excellent time and was not a bad radio. However, my unit was defective and I could NOT shut off the alarm nor could I adjust the EXTREMELY bright display. When I say bright, I am not kidding. It could nearly light the room! This is not a defect, but you should also be aware that even though the display is large and BRIGHT, the numbers were not quite large enough to easily read without our glasses. I returned my unit because of the above. However, if Sangean ever corected the defects I mentioned or you do not find these to be serious problems for you then I would say go for it.

Digital camera Review: Alarm Clock: The Next Generation
Summary: 5 Stars

I checked out a lot of alarm clocks and this one stood out above the rest. What was initially important to me was an alarm clock that had a 'digital tuner' so the frequency wouldn't drift resulting in no alarm sounding. Not only does this clock meet this need, but it also will default to the buzzer if the station fades or goes off the air!

I also wanted a clock that had both an up AND down button to adjust time. This clock also meets this criterion, however, the capacitor backup, the self correcting time feature and its dual alarm system minimizes the need for adjustments. It also has a button to reset the clock to DST and back. Why doesn't every clock have this?

Soon after I received the clock, I could tell that a lot of thought had gone into its design. In addition to the features listed, I found some nice surprises. It's meant to be operated in the dark and by a sleepy head. When you want to put it in snooze mode, you can hit ANY button on the top to activate it. When you want to turn it off, you can easily find the 'off' button in the dark using the side 'posts' as a guide. Each alarm button will light when that specific alarm will go off within 24 hrs (along with displaying the alarm time) assuring you that all is set. And that's nice, because with it's multi-day and dual alarm system, you rarely need to set it.

The five minute snooze time is a bit short for me. An ajustable snooze time would be nice addition. I would also prefer a digital volume control versus the knob to avoid accidental volume changes.

But overall, it looks great, it out performs the competition and has my recommendation. I've actually invited a few friends to my bedroom to show off....my new alarm clock!
