Digital camera reviews of Sangean RCR-22 AM/FM Atomic Clock RadioDigital camera Review: Display brightness is a big problem Summary: 2 Stars
I am returning this clock to Amazon. (Bless them for their excellent return policy.)
The RCR-22 is very nice in many ways: good FM reception, good atomic clock reception, dual alarms with day-of-week flexibility, etc.
The bad news is the display. It's WAY to bright. Sure, you can dim the light, which is a nice feature, BUT when you dim it to an acceptable level you can no longer read the display. For me, a fatal flaw.
Digital camera Review: Display is way too bright!! Summary: 1 Stars
It performs all of the basic functions well, but the display is way too bright. The entire display area is backlit, rather than just the digits. This is because the display is LCD rather than LED. This effectively makes the clock radio a nightlight. If you turn it towards your bed so that you can see the time then it's a nightlight pointing directly at your eyes while you (try to) sleep. Yes, there is a control on the bottom of the unit to turn the brightness way down and that works great at night but then you can't see the digits during the day. When you turn the brightness down, it reduces the contrast between the background and the digits so that it can't be read unless the romm is completely dark. There is an auto-dimmer that is supposed to dim the display at night and brighten it during the day but it is effectively useless. Don't purchase this clock radio to go by your bed unless you're five years old and you need a nightlight (and you want it pointed into your eyes).
Digital camera Review: Display not user friendly for my eyes Summary: 3 Stars
Great clock in a nice looking package, but I could not get used to the display. I could not adjust the dimmer to a brightness that was comfortable to live with. It was either too bright and would light up the room or too dim and could not see the numbers. Could be the display numbers are a little too small or maybe a font that is not easily read at a quick glance. Anyway, I was disappointed enough that I did return the unit. Amazons return policy is outstanding, no questions asked and I had my refund in a little over a week.
Digital camera Review: Dissapointment Summary: 3 Stars
To easy to push wrong button in the dark. Do not appreciate bright lite comng on every time a station is changed or when the set is turned off or on. Why not a mono instead of a stereo jack Good design but AM reception 90 miles away not the best.
Digital camera Review: Ditto - except for display brightness Summary: 4 Stars
I knew what to expect after reading the product reviews, and the unit did not disappoint me. I can only echo what I have read before: it's an excellent choice with only a few minor areas for improvement. One of those areas of improvement, display intensity, is important enough for me to rate the RCR-22 four stars instead of five.
I have retired clock radios in the past because their displays were bright enough that they interfered with my sleep. (I know it's a quirk, but it's my money I'm spending.) Even after turning the display intensity all the way down (with the little knob on the bottom of the unit), the display remains a strong night light. I like everything else so much that I'm covering the display so I can get to sleep, but I would be happier if it had a little more range at the bottom of the dimming scale.
