Digital camera reviews of Sanyo 277265 Eneloop Power Pack with Battery Charger, 8 AA & 2 AAA Batteries Plus 4 C & 4 D Size Adapter (CostCo Kit #2)

Digital camera Review: Batteries Poorly Made
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased multiple packs of these batteries, including chargers, only to find the batteries had severely corroded within 6 months of purchase. I had placed them all in a moisture-proof bag for protection, and no moisture was found in the bag--nor were the batteries exposed to extreme temperatures.

I am a huge fan of rechargeable batteries, but this brand did NOT stand up, and was a complete waste of money. I'm buying Energizer rechargeables now, and so far, no problems.

Digital camera Review: Best Battery as of 02/2010
Summary: 5 Stars

I've watched batteries go from Carbon to HD Carbon to Alkaline to NI-Cad to MiMH to Eneloops & Li-ions...

Each step better than the last, Alkilines gave us more power but were one time use, Ni-Cads gave us power and multi-use but had memory problems, NiMH gave us power, multi-use, no memry problems but lost power while being stored... then came the Eneloop & Litium Ion batteries... power, multi-use, no memory and shelf life!!!

The hybrid Enloop NiMH is the winner until the cost of Lithiums come down (try to find Lithium AAA, AA, C & D batteries), one advantage Lithium Ions have over the Enloop is there is no "Fade" towards the end of discharge which means you get full power up till the end at that point the cell is "dead" until you recharge.

As far as people complaning about the spacers not being "real" batteries or "WARNING- No C or D batteries included!"... like most of them own up to, it's their fault, not Sanyo or the seller. If they don't take the time to read the details, common sense should have told them you are not going to get 18 Enloop batteries for $32.99 especially if that includes 8 C & D cells. (When 4 single Enelopp AAs are currently being sold for $9 to $15)

I'm not trying to be rude, but buy your stuff at a brick & mortar to see it in person if you are not going to do a little comparison research before hitting the "Submit Order" Button.

Eneloops are the current best value... period.

Digital camera Review: Best Rechargeable AA Batteries Available
Summary: 5 Stars

With a dozen digital cameras and loads of kids toys to power, we have hundreds of rechargeable batteries. These perform as good as Japanese 2650mah Duracells. Even in cameras that don't like rechargeable batteries, these read full power and last 2X longer than a quality alkaline. The batteries I received were Japanese AA 2000mah dated 2009 and AAA 800mah dated 2008. They arrived charged and ready to go! They appear to be the exact same battery as the Duracell. The charger requires you charge them in pairs. This is a generic Chinese charger sold under several brand names. The contacts are a bit flimsy, but I never had one break. Charge time is roughly 7 hours, and they read about 1.4VDC when fully charged and 1.1VDC when exhausted. They have no problem with my 1 hour fast chargers from Duracell, Energizer and Kodak.

The C & D cell adapters work fine. Of course, a AA just can't deliver the power of the larger battery and they die about 3X faster than the appropriate alkaline. Still, they come in very handy! You get 8 AA and 2 AAA batteries... no C & D batteries at this low price! The batteries and adapters are a smidge bigger than alkaline batteries, so you may have trouble inserting them in some products (Mini Maglite for instance).

Digital camera Review: Charge is shorter than older rechargeables
Summary: 2 Stars

I ordered this pack, plus an extra pack of 6 Eneloop AA's 6 months ago based on the reviews. My older rechargables, which also came with their own brand charger, were over 2 years old and not keeping their charge as long - I always write the re-charge date so I can keep track. I use these only on our wireless keyboard and mouse's (we have 2 wireless mouse's).

Initially I was not impressed so I double-checked the review area and noted the batteries are not fully charged out of the box. So I began charging just prior to installing the batteries. Because I ordered 2 different packages of Eneloop AA's to test, it can't be that I got a bad batch. Our mouse's and keyboard lost charge at less than a month. I always turn my mouse's off after use, so the power won't be drained while not in use. I've tried charging the Eneloop's in the older charger, and the older batteries in the Eneloop charger - same results. This may be typical of Eneloop's, but my over 2-yr-old batteries hold a charge for a little over 2 months... significantly longer than the newer Eneloops.

If someone has any suggestions, I'd be happy to give these another chance.

EDIT:
I should have checked the mah rating on the older batteries - they are 2300 mah while the eneloops are 2000 mah, so the older batteries are a tad stronger... however, the first re-charge date was in 2006 (more than the 2 years I initially thought), so the older ones are well past their expire date at 4 years old. I would not recommend these batteries, but suggest looking for niMH rechargeables with a higher mah rating that are also slow self discharging. Not sure why my experience with these batteries has been opposite of others.

Digital camera Review: Choose your battery charger wisely
Summary: 4 Stars

This package offered here (Sanyo Eneloop Battery Charger w/ 8 AA & 4 AAA Batteries Plus 2 C & 2 D Size Adapter) is almost identical to another one under the same name (Sanyo Eneloop Battery Charger w/ 8 AA & 4 AAA Batteries Plus 2 C & 2 D Size Adapter). The only difference is the battery charger.

There are two versions of the Sanyo eneloop 4-cell charger available in the US (see my Customer Image on how to identify them). This package includes the MQN06. It forces you to charge cells in pairs (either 2 or 4), so it is very inconvenient if you have application that requires odd number of cells. Be careful not to charge a half-full cell in pair with an empty cell, because the first cell will end up over-charged, which is bad for its lifespan.

The MQN05 included in the other package is a slightly better charger, because it charges each cell individually. Unfortunately it only works with US voltage of 110V AC. So you must be careful not to use it in foreign countries with 220V AC.

If you need a compact travel charger that can do both (charges cells individually, and accepts universal voltage), I highly recommend either the KODAK 1-Hour Battery Charger K6200 or Duracell Mobile Charger CEF23DX4N.

[Update on June 30, 2009]
I noticed that this product page now shows an eneloop power pack in blister package, while the one I originally reviewed was in a blue plastic storage case. The contents are slightly different. It now contains 8 AA and only 2 (not 4) AAA eneloop cells. Also Sanyo seems to have phased out the MQN05 charger (the one that charges individually) and replaced it with MQN06 (charges in pairs only) in all eneloop packages. So please exercise caution when ordering this or similar products.

[Update on July 26, 2010]
There is a NEW eneloop package available. It features second-generation eneloop cells, but the same old MQN06 charger:
Sanyo Eneloop Ni-MH Charger and 8 Rechargeable AA and 4 Rechargeable AAA Batteries
