The manufacturer say these batteries come pre-charged and can be used immediately. They also say that the batteries hold their charge for a long time. I was hesitant to use them without charging them first because I did not want the batteries to run out when I was in the middle of using my digital camera. I used them as-is anyway, and carried spares.
Since I bought them, I have taken hundreds of pictures (mostly without flash) on several vacations spaced apart by several months. I wish I could tell you how many months or years these hold a charge or how many digital photos I could take on a single charge, but I still have not charged them.
I've never had anything come close to what these have done so far.

These batteries are amazing. I got these batteries as a trial to replace 2 other sets of 2700 mAH batteries (Maha PowerEx and Ultra) that even when supposedly fully charged could not turn on my Canon S2 IS digital camera.
I got the package of Eneloops from Amazon.com, and put them into my digital camera. They have been in use for nearly a month now without having been charged yet. They have taken about 180 photos, including probably 40 or more of them with the flash.

Right out of the package they have lasted longer than my other rechargable batteries and are still going strong. The best rechargales I've ever owned. Don't bother with any other rechargeable batteries, these things are the best I've ever used. Their longevity is absurd. You can leave them sitting around in a drawer or even leave them in the item you are using them for months at a time and they are still charged. Got them initially for my Canon PowerShot SX10IS and was worried about having to recharge AA batteries constantly, but these completely allayed my fears. Love them!
