Digital camera reviews of Seagate Barracuda 7200 1.5 TB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s 32MB Cache 3.5 Inch Internal Hard Drive ST31500341AS-Bare DriveDigital camera Review: D.O.A. HDD Summary: 1 Stars
Unfortunately the HDD I received was damaged.
I tried SEATOOLS and DiskWizard from Seagate's website but they (and Windows) do not detect any disk (my PC BIOS does not detect any HDD either)... It just makes a clicking sound known as the "Click of Death"... it denotes a physical damage and these sounds can be caused by a malfunctioning spindle, Read Write head or loose components.
I have another Barracuda 500GB drive which has been working great for over 2 years... I believe it is a matter of luck. However I am glad that Amazon refunded my money. I will probably buy another one but I might do it from a local store, I do not want to wait for another drive that might arrive damaged...
Digital camera Review: DOA... DOA... DOA Summary: 1 Stars
What else can I say. This drive showed up DOA. You can't give it ANY stars then. I was really hoping to give this drive a perfect 5star rating. NEVER have I had this experience with any drive manufacturer, Come on Seagate this is your flagship.
I spent the good part of a day messing with drivers and firmware updates. Neither of my computers could see this drive under any circumstance possible. Both the MB manufacturer and Seagate believe the drive is dead. Whose fault, Seagate, Amazon, UPS... who knows. The product was packaged VERY well and I left the drive warm up for 12 hours before I started messing with it.
This drive was purchased to explore the possiblity of creating a pretty sizable array to hold over 1000 DVD's for a HTPC. Hopefully the technology isn't too new that it is so unpredictable.
Pros: HUGE capacity
Cons: DOA... DOA... DEAD ON ARRIVAL!!!
I will write a follow up review on the replacement drive Amazon is shipping.
Digital camera Review: Dead in less that a year. Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this drive in Nov '09. It's Jul'10 and drive has started to act up. It's too unreliable to trust with my data.
Digital camera Review: Despite reviews - happy customer Summary: 4 Stars
I am only using this drive as a backup and have been very happy with it over the past month. I have it docked in a Thermaltake BlacX eSATA Hard Drive USB Docking Station with the Serial Ata To External Serial Ata Dual Port Adapter and only have the drive on when I perform manual backups each week. The drive is quiet and has performed solidly for the approximately 40-80 hours of use. I would recommend at this time. If anything changes, I will update this review.
Digital camera Review: Didn't mention that this drive is OEM and has older firmware. Summary: 4 Stars
I brought this drive at 12/6/08 and when I received it, it was just a plain brownbox oem drive with no instructions nor cables. The box looks like it has been previously opened also. It didn't matter to me because I have lots of sata cables anyways and I don't need instructions. I have a Gigabyte 965p-s3 motherboard and the motherboard won't detect the drive when connected to the purple jmicron controller but works with the integrated ICH8 controller. I used acronis and moved the OS over from my old 400gb hard drive to this one and it works fine. One minor quirk is that it makes a clicking noise when this drive boots up. I thought that they would've fixed the firmware issue by the time when ship the drive but I guess they didn't. Mine's came with SD17 firmware and I had to manually update it with SD1A firmware. However, I was using the hard drive with the SD17 firmware for a few days and it seems to be working fine.
I would've given it 5 stars if Amazon says that it is an OEM drive so I would know what I am buying. Other than that, the hard drive works great.
