Digital camera Review: Is a good power button too much to ask for?
Summary: 3 Stars

This drive seems to work well in both (ubuntu) Linux and Mac OS X after re-formatting it to FAT32 format. Its lack of a power button makes it very hard to tell whether it's on or off after disconnecting it from the computer. That's because sometimes you hear the fan running after being disconnected (or unmounted) and sometimes you don't hear the fan running after disconnection. The so-called power button is a big joke! I wonder which engineers at Seagate thought it was good enough. It works erratically and it's essentially worthless if connecting the drive to the computer after connecting it to the mains supply causes the computer to automatically detect the drive. It would have been wiser to have a mechanical switch if the intent was to have a switch that actually works. In this age of consciousness on energy conservation I think Seagate should have been more deliberate on how to power down the device and power up the device whether or not it's connected to a computer. The device "flanks the test" in this regard.

Digital camera Review: It's so freaking bright
Summary: 4 Stars

I haven't had much of a chance to test it out yet. A hard drive is a hard drive. My biggest issue is with the light they decided this hard drive needed. I have an older Seagate external that I've been happy with, so I decided to buy a new Seagate. The old one had a bright blue LED indicator on the power button and that was it. I covered it with some electrical tape, problem solved. This new one lights up on the front, back, and the top. And not just a little LED indicator.. it's a nightlight, casting a dim light on everything in my room. Why do I need such a bright indicator that my external hard drive is turned on? I'd rather just check in Finder.

So the nice metallic case is now covered in duct tape to block out the light. Seagate, maybe next time, just go with a dim LED? Or some sort of switch for us people who don't care.

Digital camera Review: Junk, junk, junk...Beaware!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

A year ago I bought one of these. After several months it started to give me this message (can't access because of hardware failure )!!!!
I have no idea how to solve this and I have already more than 400gb of important stuff on it. This is my worst nightmare.

Digital camera Review: Looks cool at first
Summary: 2 Stars

This item seemed to heat up fairly hot when I used it. I backed everything up to it, it comes with pretty good software. I hooked it up to a usb hub so I can control all these things at once. last night it began sticking and then started buzzing every five seconds. If you dont beleive me search on your google free agent buzzing. It seemed like it was incurable so I took it back. Seagate and Maxtor have always been run of the mill brands, I always trust western digital a bit more. DOnt know why. I got a mybook home. It is cool and easier to see when its working or not. Power button is clearly defined, unline the seagate. The seagat is also going to be top heavy on that wierd base it has. So You will have to place it in an area were it wont tip over.

I lost interest and looked to western digital. The software they both use is the same one, so you wont have any issues going from one to another.

Also Seagate had a bunch of uneeded software, the western digital had just what you needed, nothing more and nothing less. I liked that.

The western digital world edition i passed up because people said it sounded like a rocket ship. The western digital home one doesnt sound like its on at all, its easy to see when the drive is working and I dig on that!

Good luck, if you get stuck with the seagate problem, I told ya so!

Digital camera Review: Mac Friendly
Summary: 5 Stars

So, i just purchased this item and i must admit that at first i had no idea what i was doing. I have researched all the different brands and settled with this FreeAgent Pro 500 [FireWire 400, USB 2.0, & eSATA] for my MacBook OS X 10.5 and realized that i didnt need to worry with the installation parts that it askes you to do. i just ran Time Machine and it's working like a charm.

Best part about it, the price for the amount of gigs. Frys Electronics has a sale going on until September 11th, 2008 for the FreeAgent Pro 500 [FireWire 400, USB 2.0, & eSATA] for 89.99. Originally 149.99. can't be that. ^-^
