Digital camera reviews of Seagate ST302504FDA1E1-RK FreeAgent Desktop 250 GB 3.5" USB 2.0 External Hard Drive

Digital camera Review: 250 GB hard drive
Summary: 5 Stars

The product works well. The auto backup function is convenient. It ensures that anything I add will not be lost if anything happens to my computer.
The included software hasn't slowed down my computer at all.

Digital camera Review: 8 Months of Action Still Going Strong
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had no problems with the drive. It is fast with USB 2.0. I've only had it connected to a single machine. I've used about 100GB of the capacity backing up my files. I've restored files from several directories and experienced no corruption.

Digital camera Review: A bit on the bulky side
Summary: 4 Stars

I should've done my homework before buying this unit. It's big and bulky, bulkier than my old desktop drive, but it stands up so it's not much of a space muncher, but it can be a bit of an eyesore, in my opinion anyway.

I can't say anything bad about the performance of it though, it's very stable and hasn't given me much trouble, even between switching between mac and windows. Has one bug with mac though, the unit will not power off when ejected from the mac (i.e. software wise, not unplugged) whereas it will when removed from windows (as you would with any other drive before unplugging it). It'll stay on as long as the computer's on, and i don't know how good that is for the drive, as it just keeps running without any data being transfered. Might shorten the lifespan of the drive; i guess we'll see in time. As many users have said, a on/off switch might've been nice.

Still, the auto-backup utilities make it very convenient to keep on your desktop to protect sensitive files and to avoid data loss, but the size doesn't make it very convenient to transport. It's fine if strictly as a desktop drive, do not get this if you're looking for "portable".

Digital camera Review: A breeze to get it running!
Summary: 5 Stars

It's not often that a technical product is geared towards the non-techie. It's rarer that it delivers a product that works for a non-techie. Certainly external hard drives are nothing challenging anymore, but Seagate embraces non-technical folks with quirky packaging and a ridiculously short setup manual that includes the estimated time to completion - in minutes and seconds!. Not only is the Free Agent truly plug and play but the look is clean, sharp, cool, and eye-catching. You won't mind having this sit on your desk. This thing takes longer to get out of the box than it takes to get it functioning. Seriously!

Of course I'm something of a techie, so in order to get a truly non-technical seal of approval, you'll have to read a review from a grannie. I wouldn't hold your breath.

My only gripe in order to truly make this device fully functional would be to address the obvious next steps: how do I do a full system backup? How do I copy files? Seagate makes an error in not cross-promoting an equally easy-to-use backup third party software. Of course all Windows XP users have Microsoft Backup available, which includes an easy-to-use wizard to get you going.

As someone who has had a few hard drives fail on him in the past, I remark at how long it took me to get one of these things. Remember, all hard drive manufacturers measure the reliability of a hard drive in terms of "mean time to failure," which implies that all hard drives eventually fail. With a backup hard disk, you always are operating with a safety net!

Digital camera Review: A safe purchase. 5 Year Warranty!
Summary: 5 Stars

I had tried for so long to find a reliable hard drive. This is the only company that has so much faith in their product that they include a 5 year warranty. Seagate offers a very reliable product, and you can rest easy knowing that they will take care of it for the next 5 years. After trying and researching other hard drives, I am extremely happy that I purchased this product.

Whatever you do, don't buy Iomega!! HORRIBLE customer service and unreliable machines!
