Digital camera Review: 5 Stars based on price Summary: 5 Stars
No, this set of headphones do not provide the best sound quality, as other reviewers have mentioned. But that should be obvious based on the price. Based on the price, this set simply blows the competition out of the water. You will find lower end Sony's, Bose, teac's and panasonics costing much more, yet their sound quality is not as good as these 202's. I have had mine for about 2 yrs now and without a doubt they are the best value and quality headphones for casual ipod listening. If you want something for a studio then obviously consider the senn 505 instead. The bass levels are very good on these phones, though I've noticed the sound quality falls when the volume level is lower than around 70%. Under that, the bass reproduction is too much in relation to the volume level. But at 70% or above, it is very good.
Digital camera Review: 5 stars for sound & value, but... Summary: 5 Stars
The Sennheiser HD 202 headphones have great sound right out of the box (full, not boomy bass, along w/very crisp mid-range and treble; they may sound even better after a break-in period at higher volume which I haven't done yet). Don't need a lot of power to drive them. These phones are excellent in making mp3 files on a personal device sound superb, especially in an indoor setting. And the great sealing out of household noise (like tv or conversations) allows these phones to be driven at very safe levels without losing sound quality. An excellent choice for around $20.
I've used them for about a month, and there are some negatives.
*The chord is 10' long so it is not optimally designed for personal/portable music use (it does come with an oblong wrap-the-chord-around belt clip w/4 slots to hold the chord in place...this may be a possible breaking point for the chord in the future if it flexes back and forth in the slot). The weight of this clip w/chord, if not properly clipped onto a belt, pocket, etc., would probably cause stress on any connection to phones or device. The chord seems to be pretty solid with reinforced connections. The end is a straight plug (I find L- shaped are better for personal devices because of less movement stress on the chord/plug connection). It comes w/a bigger plug adaptor for use w/home stereos.
*The fit is very tight so they do a good job of sealing out noise so I don't have to turn them up and ruin my hearing. They are not totally around the ear (I have a pair like that so my ears are "loose" inside and they don't hurt after long use, but those are much bigger than the 202's), so after about an hour my ears start to hurt a bit, especially with glasses, because the fit is so tight (but I do have a wide head). I think I will have to be VERY careful in cold weather not to snap the plastic head band when I take them off and on.
*As is very common with this type of headphone, they aren't great outdoors in a breeze. I got these partly to keep my ears warm in cold weather during walks, skiing, etc, but if there is a breeze it sounds like a "howl" in the phones. NOT FOR OUTDOOR USE w/COAT COLLARS. After using these for over a month, I find that in cold weather a coat collar rubbing on the ear cups or the chord (especially closer to the cups) will cause a lot of noise (not unlike the sound of breeze/wind on the cups, only more choppy...wind is more steady like white noise or a passing jet). I guess the only way around this problem is to use "buds" underneath an ear band or muffs.
For the price you can't beat these...a great sound improvement over in-ear phones (unless you spend a lot).
Digital camera Review: A Good Buy Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the Sennheiser HD 202 Headphones after reading the very good reviews on Amazon.com. The sound is very good inexpensive product. It provides very good highs and a rich rounded bass sound. Wearing them provides a comfort fit covering your ears and eliminates most exterior sound. This is a good buy for consumers looking to buy a product that's not too expensive.
Digital camera Review: A Good Value, But So-So Overall quality Summary: 3 Stars
Many people give these headphones pretty good reviews, which is why I bought them five months ago. Initially, I liked them. With time and use, the luster has worn off. I continue to regard them as a fairly good value for the money, but they are in no way good or excellent headphones. After three months, I bought a pair of HD555's to replace them on my sound system. I continued to use them on my iMac but am now planning to replace them altogether with HD428's on that system.
At best, these headphones are suitable only for occasional use as lightweight phones on a mobile device like an iPod. Over the past five months, I have come to these conclusions about the 202's:
1. Comfort. While the 202's are more comfortable for me than ear buds, for instance, they cannot approach the comfort of a well-designed set of phones like the 555's. The ear cushions are not as snug and seem ill-fitting and somewhat harder than I would like. The headband requires constant adjusting, and the action is poor. Extended use of the phones is not very comfortable.
2. Construction. These are flimsy plastic headphones. Over time, I have found that they tend to pull apart rather easily, so I am constantly trying to piece them back together. Simple things like the cord routing are poor--I am constantly stepping on the cord and snagging it.
3. Sound field. The 202's have a somewhat constrained sound field compared to the 555's, which are much more expansive.
4. Response. Although the frequency response looks good on paper, in practice the sound from these phones is just not as rich with either the resonance or harmonics of better headphones.
5. Downmixing. For headphone use, my receiver downmixes eight channels into two. This comes through as distorted sound on the 202's. The 555's, in contrast, have no difficulty with downmixing.
