I wouldn't consider myself an "audiophile," but I am definitely picky about speakers/headphones and am pretty sensitive to poor sound quality. However, I don't own a $10,000 car stereo and/or $20,000 home stereo. I bought these headphones because I was looking for a high-quality, great sounding set for a reasonable price. With Sennheiser, you can't go wrong. I researched two models; the HD-280s and HD-555s. I chose these due to their lower cost, closed back design and higher rating for music reproduction. I'm not disappointed. Everything, down to the packaging, is high quality and obviously well-made. The headphones are comfortable. The wiring is thick and durable. It and almost all other parts are user servicable. Bass is solid, not boomy or distorted at all volume levels. Highs are smooth and clean, not too high or scratchy. Mids are also equally smooth. This is a true soundproof headphones device...when I play the piano, I put these on so no one hears what I am playing and I can focus what I am playing at the same time. I cannot hear anything outside the surroundings of this headphone when I wear it. I've wanted a quality pair of head phones for such a loong time. I got this for christmas and when I first listened to my favorite song through these, I almost cry it was so much more beautiful. I love these headphones. They are great for anyone who wants to hear all the instruments in the song. The base is not over powering, which is a nice change from most headphones now a days. I don't recommend them if you are wanting to listen to techno or other heavy base music, however I do recommend them for all other types of music. I'm not a huge audiophile or anything, but these headphones make a massive difference. You can hear all the subtle details in music that you've been missing listening to your iPod buds or cheapo Skullcandy.
I've never owned any high-quality headphones like this before, but I did a lot of research prior to purchasing and this particular model is consistently rated among the best in its class. The only headphone that outclassed it in the same price range (I can't remember the make/model off the top of my head) were in open configuration-- meaning heavy sound leakage. These headphones are closed, and very well so. That means they offer an impressive degree of noise isolation (they can't hear you, you can't hear them) shy only of active noise cancellation.
I would also consider these an investment. The same model's been around for the better part of a decade, and Sennheiser specifically offers replacements on the cheap for all the parts prone to breaking down (i.e. foam ear cups, headband, etc).
Lastly, these came refurbished, and as far as I'm concerned they're brand new at a steep discount with less packaging. I haven't had any reason to think they're in less than perfect condition, and I imagine a company like Sennheiser does pretty good quality control.
