Digital camera Review: A better sleeve for the Shure E2c ear phones.

I bought these Shure E2c-n earphones to give me a lighter weight alternative to my beloved Bose QC2 noise cancelling headphones for flying the airlines. The noise on flights drives me nuts, and the Bose does a great job of shutting out the chaos while keeping great sound, but the headphone style units are fairly bulky to lug around.
I tried each pair of Shure ear bud sleeves to get the best sound, finally staying with medium foam sleeves. The foam seems to give me the best noise exclusion with the best bass response. But the foam on these is coarse and pretty firm, and after flights, I was grimacing when I had to take out the ear phones.
So I made my own foam sleeves! I keep some drug store neoprene foam ear plugs handy anyway for flights, and they are comfortable and quiet. So I cut a couple of these plugs in half. I sharpened the end of a 1/8" brass tube I had in the shop, squished the earplugs lengthwise, then tapped the sharpened tube with a hammer on the pancake shaped squished plugs to core the center. After the plugs re-expanded, I pulled them carefully onto the Shure ear phones, which was something like pulling an old wad of gum over the end of the earphones. Once the new sleeves re-expanded, I put the earphones into my ears very much like regular neoprene foam ear plugs.
With the new foam sleeves, I think I can see why Shure uses the harder foam, as the soft foam damps the midrange and highs a little bit. But with the EQ set to "acoustic" on my iPod for a little more midrange and high, the ear phones sound great, are very comfortable and way quiet. Nice!
