When I was younger I used to sell portable electronics, including headphones. We sold another brand of headphones for $60 and another for $120 and at the time, I just couldn't believe people would pay that much no matter how good they sound.
Ten years later and I'm all growns up and have more disposable income. I also work out at the gym a lot and the $10-20 pairs just were cutting it for a variety of reasons.
Enter the Shure headphones. Everyone seemed to rave about them, so I bought a pair and instantly fell in love with them. Being older and wiser, I averaged the cost of the headphones across a year of every-day use and then you're talking pennies a day for vast improvement over $20 pair.
Plus, for my ears, they fit comfortably, the wires stay out of the way and they block out a great deal of outside noise, but not all of it (which is good because I don't want to get too lost in the music).
I eventually upgraded to a $250 dollar pair of Shure headphones. They did sound better, but just weren't as comfortable. Now, I'm just happy with the $60 pair and I own a few of them.
The fitting I think is the biggest issue, but most people should just run through all the different (at least six different shapes/materials) and use each one for a day or workout session and one will fit better than the rest. Then, I think over time most will become accustom to having these IN your ears.
