Digital camera Review: A solid performer with a few quirks

I bought this lens used from a friend for a steal of a price. He's a pro and uses Canon L series so he didnt need it anymore. While this lens rates nowhere near those glorious L's it is still a very stout lens which can offer up fantastic results. I have read in some of the other reviews that it tends to back/front focus. I wouldnt say it "tends" to, but it does happen sometimes. In fact the af can be a little finicky all around when you start to move in close to your subject and I must add that it is quite noisy. So in terms of af operation I would probably give it 3 stars. When zoomed out or at a distance of more than 3 feet from your subject it is snappy but I can see how some people think it can be a bit of a headache. That being said, this lens performs superbly in the area that really counts. Image quality. Like most lenses, there is the occasional rotten apple but the one I have is stellar, especially at f 4+. Having the ability to stop to 2.8 is nice, and can render some good results, but if you are shooting in low light you will obviously benefit more from a nice prime. The pictures in normal conditions are beautifully contrasty and vibrant. All the lines are sharp and it doesnt tend to over saturate, which is something I found with a few nikkor lenses of similar price and build. This could just be my own observational biases though. All in all, I use this lens more than any other. It is a bit weighty and when pointed down you will find a bit of lens creep, but for images this nice I can live with a few quirks
