Digital camera reviews of Skullcandy Full Metal Jacket Earbud, 11mm - MacSilverDigital camera Review: Excellent sound quality!!!! but..... Summary: 4 Stars
These have the best sound I've ever heard from any ear buds. They have great bass response, and crystal clear mids and highs. One complaint is the wire is very rigid. I'm not sure why they designed them like that. My one guess is they don't catch on your clothing like rubber insulated ones do. IDK?? The reason I don't like this is they never lost their bends from original packaging. I found this a bit annoying. My other complaint is I've had ear buds that stayed in better, but I suspect everyone would have a different opinion on this since everyone's ear canals will be of a different size and shape. Overall, I was going for sound quality and these, like I said are the best buds I've ever heard. I got mine for only $38.00 on Amazon, so I feel it was absolutely money well spent. I'm not sure I'd have felt the same way if I paid retail, which is $70.00 I believe. The sound quality would still be there, but I'd like a better fit and more flimsy wire for that price. They do come with the foam buds, and they did stay in much better, but they aren't as comfortable and look horrible. I do love their sound quality though, enjoy!
Digital camera Review: Fine sound, clumsy cables Summary: 3 Stars
The one thing I'll add to the other reviews is that these particular earbuds have a very stiff wire, even stiffer in the cold. The result is that they retain all the kinks in the wire, get caught on clothes easily and rip them out of your ear, and conduct thumping noises into your ear everytime you brush the wire against clothes or skin. All this disrupts your listening experience.
Digital camera Review: Flawed Design Summary: 1 Stars
Headphone wires are like piano wire, especially in cold weather. Hard to bend, do not hang right and bunch up. Wire is too short to keep iPod in pants pocket. Has an extension wire, but adds a lot of cord.
And I just lost sound on the right side. They are now in the garbage.
Great sound, but there are a lot of headphones with great sound for the money. Construction rates one star.
Digital camera Review: Freking Sweet!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
After having a bad experience with Skullcandy skullcrushers I figured I would give Skullcandy another chance (just cause Im a nice guy). So I went on a hunt looking for some in ear headphones and everywhere I went I heard one thing, get the FMJ's. So I did.... and wow, they rock!
Digital camera Review: Good sound, poor durability Summary: 2 Stars
Initially I was very happy with my purchase - an above average sounding earbuds for a decent price, with adjustable volume control. Over time I ran across two main problems:
1) Durability
The wire insulation feels like it's made out of some cheap synthetic material, that you could probably just rub off if you twist it between your fingers hard enough. The first signs of fraying appeared about 9 months in. I tried to salvage the situation as best I could by using crazy glue to harden the material, which actually worked for a few months.
Then 3 months after that (12 months total ownership), I noticed the volume in my left earbud was about 25% reduced compared to my right. At this point, the wires were fraying all over the place--near the input jack and everywhere near the earbuds.
3 more months (15 months in), the left earbud finally went dead, due to the wiring completely frayed right next to it. I burnt off the insulation and reconnected the wires, when I found that the wiring was disconnected near the volume control as well, which I couldn't access. At this point I gave up trying to salvage the earbuds.
2) Customer Service
Like another reviewer noted, Skull Candy never got back to me. I e-mailed them three times, each time right after each issue occurred above. So much for getting a [...] rebate on the next purchase.
Like another reviewer said, if the earbuds lasted longer, I would be happy with my purchase and probably rate it a 4-5. But it didn't, and I feel like I wasted my money.
So yeah, I'm probably gonna go with the Sennheiser CX300 for my replacement. My girlfriend has one, and the wiring feels a lot sturdier and the sound quality just as good. (It seems that Shure has some durability issues too, judging from some reviews...)
A final note: I tend to take care of my stuff pretty well. I own a 4 year old Dell notebook, and a lot of used and way too old electric guitar equipment (amps, pedals, etc.), and they've all in fine condition.
