Digital camera reviews of Sling Media Slingbox AV (SB240-100)Digital camera Review: Cool gadget for the road warrior Summary: 5 Stars
Just received the Slinbox A/V. It took 2 minutes to set up and get running. The slingbox even has great steps for configuring your router. First reaction is that this is everything I could possibly have wanted. No more sitting in a hotel room on a business trip watching animated depiction of a sporting event. I can now catch my favorite teams games wherever I am. You can even use your video on demand and watch it anywhere. Great product. I was surprised how small it is. I wish it had an on/off switch, because I don't want to be streaming my tv 24/7. But pulling the plug works too. If you are looking to stream your digital cable box to your office, friends house, hotel room, go for this.
Digital camera Review: Coolest! Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the coolest toys that I have purchased for myself in a long time. It goes very well with my smartphone and laptop!
Digital camera Review: Decent Performance Great Concept Summary: 3 Stars
Been using the Slingbox on two Macintosh computers running OS X since December 2006, one computer is a fast Intel Core Duo iMac and the other a slower Dual G4. Works acceptably on the iMac and barely on the Dual G4. Every Beta update that comes out for OS X actually gets noticeably slower on both machines. The initial beta release actually worked quite well on the Dual G4, but the latest beta releases run measurably slower on both machines. This doesn't really make any sense at all, a Dual G4 with a Radeon MacPro video card and 256MB of VRAM should be more than adequate to run this program full screen, which I could on the Dual G4 after the first beta release of the software. Now the G4 can only runs in a reduced screen mode. The iMac still runs ok in full screen, but when manipulating the remote controls for our Dish DVR things get surprisingly clunky. The reason it concerns me is that, if subsequent releases are going to get slower and slower, what are we going to be left with by the time the first "final release" comes out? I also find it a bit frustrating that there does not seem to be any way to communicate these concerns to the good people at Sling Media - what's up with that? I hope this review gets to Sling somehow, because I really think a Dual G4 with a fast video card should really be adequate - really.
Digital camera Review: Delivers on Promises Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the Slingbox so my son living in Japan could follow his favorite NCAA football teams on live TV. It was easy to set up and works like a charm. I even use in on my home network to watch TV on my desktop while I work.
Digital camera Review: Difficult installation, but works excellently Summary: 5 Stars
Installation can be challenging; at least it was for me. Follow the instructions carefully, and even then, be prepared to guess at a couple of steps.
I originally attempted to install my Slingbox AV without using a router, instead swapping my ethernet cable between two computers. Big mistake; it won't work. The manufacturer warns that one needs a router for the type of configuration I was attempting, but I didn't see the notice until later.
Even after I bought a router, I had to obtain help from SlingBox's support center to get everything to work. Some things can't be fixed when you're in a remote location; you need to have your traveling computer hooked up to the Slingbox via your router.
But once you've installed it, it does work very well. I have a reasonably good, but not excellent, connection at my remote location, and Slingbox seems to have engineered the compression algorithms expertly, because I get a fairly good picture even at the rather low streaming rate of 300 kb/sec.
