Digital camera reviews of SolidTek DM-L2 DigiMemo L2 8-1/2-by-11-Inch Digital NotepadDigital camera Review: A really great item Summary: 5 Stars
I have had one of these tablets for almost two years. I liked it so much I bought it for a gift for a friend. I can't type and listen at the same time. This allows me to write my notes by hand and store them in my computer. I use this tablet approximately 8-10 hours a day four days per week. It has held up to this very heavy use very well. I highly recommend this tablet.
Digital camera Review: A really inferior product on so many levels Summary: 1 Stars
I would advise a prospective buyer to stay away from this product. My experience has been the following:
1. The CD that came with it has a trojan (artemis) which my antivirus software blocked. I went to acecad's website and downloaded the software. That worked fine. This problem is not the killer.
2. The off-line capturing feature does not work properly. Most of the time my pen strokes are not captured no matter how hard or soft I press the pen. It captured some strokes but was largely useless when imported into the computer.
3. After a few minutes of use the pad just froze. It would show 999 and not respond to anything. I even removed the battery and reinserted it. Nothing. Connected it to the computer again and nothing. It basically doesn't do anything.
Luckily I just got it today and will be returning it barring the slight chance that acecad will reply to my email and resolve all issues.
Like I said, stay away. It's not worth it.
Digital camera Review: A student's review Summary: 4 Stars
I bought the tablet and software today and it works just as advertised in Windows Vista 32 bit. I also got a square trade warranty for it to another $20.00. It took forever to recognize my hand writing. It would only get up to 70% and the software requires at least 80%. One way around this is to add your written pages twice. Once it recognized most of my letters the hand writing recognition was better than I could have hoped for, though not perfect. I find I do need to write on a hard surface though like a desk.
There is space for a tether on both the pen and the tablet so it won't go missing. With the software it easily exports into a Microsoft Word file and can be used as a semi decent graphics tablet in Microsoft Paint and probably with other mouse based graphics programs.
Refills can be bought at HOTPINS.COM for $16.50 for a pack of 6. It outlines what refills will work in the manual.
You will need the software (Digimemo My Notes) to export to a word file or as rtf. Its another $35.00-44.00 depending on where you buy it. The pad only comes with a 30 day trial. It also comes, with he Digimemo Manager software and Arioform demo. I have found these useless, as I transcribe my notes as soon as I'm done. The pen is a little bit big but is not uncomfortable, though I wish the fillers would last longer. It would also be nice to have a calibration program of pen to mouse because it took me way longer to figure this out than it should have. But then I rarely read manuals so I really can't complain. This tablet is perfect for me because it means that now I don't have to retype my copious notes including those with charts and can do the occasional sketch or doodle. I wouldn't say this was a tablet for a serious artist but then I don't use it for that. For me it fits the bill.
It also works just fine on my Sony Vaio running Windows 64-bit.
Digital camera Review: A very Useful Product Summary: 5 Stars
I have used the 8-1/2"x11" Digital Notepad every weekday for the past month to teach high school math classes. I use the on-line writing feature with a laptop connected to a projector to put notes on the board. I print these notes to pdf format using PrimoPDF and post them to a website. I use the Notepad off-line to write out and save solutions to exercises which would take too long to type in mathematical notation: these pages are easily downloaded from the Notepad's memory to a computer and printed to pdf format for posting on the web. After about 90 hours of use, I have found this product to be reliable and well worth the price.
Digital camera Review: ACECAD in the lab environment. Summary: 4 Stars
I am a researcher and make notes all the time. However, good bookkeeping becomes very tedious when you have 10 lab notebooks and you want to refer to notes you made a few years ago. I brought ACECAD a few weeks ago after doing some research on how to save handwritten notes on my laptop or a remote drive on a server. I think I am quite happy with it, since the last three weeks I have been using it. The software, hardware installed quite easily. The pad faithfully records every stroke from my pen while I scribble notes, make diagrams or tables. The software is compatible with MS onenote which is a great way to archive all data and notes with an amazing amount of granularity in detail. I would highly recommend this for people who stay in the lab all day doing experiments, etc. Here are few other things to note -
1. I don't know how long the batteries will last since its only been 3 weeks and 12 pages of handwritten notes.
2. I have not tested the pad for chemical inertness (i.e., havent done a acid drop test!) neither have I knocked this around too much so I am not sure how it will withstand a "field" test.
3. The pad stays in my backpack all the time and the sensors on it have been fine till now.
Some shortcomings -
1. I have overwritten on pages that I have already written on or started writing without the unit "on". There should be some way of preventing that. For now I have to make sure that my page number matches with the page number on the screen. It just takes some getting used to.
2. The handwriting recognition software is on a 30-day trial offer. It should be included in the package, free of charge. I have not used this and am not sure how it will work.
