Digital camera reviews of SolidTek DM-L2 DigiMemo L2 8-1/2-by-11-Inch Digital NotepadDigital camera Review: My exprience with ACECAD: Summary: 5 Stars
I bought my ACECAD four weeks ago. First let me point out that prior to buying ACECAD I had a similar product made by another company. I was disgusted with that other product for several reasons. First, on several occasions I will write notes and when I try to download the notes to my computer I will find lots of streaks in the document. Secondly, the pen was so big (almost the size of my arms!) that writing more than a few lines at a time was prone to make my fingers ache horribly. Finally, the free software that came with it was horrible. Very often giving very wrong conversions that I had to do a lot of editing even for neatly handwritten text. Worst of all, it will often want to send my documents via e-mail - for whatever reason I would not know.
While shopping for this product I surveyed other products (some of them very high end electronic products) that can do handwriting recognition. I avoided some of these because of cost and also because I heard that while writing on these products you cannot let your hand rest on the surface otherwise it will create streaks across the page.
Anyway, I read the comments on the ACECAD paying a lot of attention to the pros and cons. I took the bite in the long run and ordered for one via Amazon. So far, my experience is one of awe - at least compared to that other product I have. First, I have written a huge volume of notes (completely finishing the 50 pages or so of the writing pad that came with the product). These were heavy lecture notes that I had been dreaming of typing out on the computer so I can easily make changes to them every year that I teach the course. In all these 50 pages I had written so far I only lost one page on the first day that I got the product. For some reason the page just disappeared. I later realized that it was most likely because I removed the USB cable connecting the ACECAD to my computer without first ejecting it! This MAY be the reason for the page losses a few people complained about. To cut a long story short since that first day, I never lost a single page - I always eject the product from my computer before disconnecting the cable. On other counts, the software MyScript Notes that I bought with the product is simply awesome. In the fifty or so pages that I wrote, I hardly make more than 5-8 corrections per page. I give this software an A++ in its excellent text recognition. I will buy the next update that they come up with! One thing though that I will like to see them add in the next update is recognition of greek letters. If they do that, they will capture the market of the scientific/mathematical community that write in this lingo. So far I got it to recognize one greek letter (mu). I have not tried others. Finally, despite the complaints made by other buyers on the pen of the ACECAD, I consider it an excellent replacement of the `piece of log' I had to use with the other product I have. The size of the ACECAD pen is just right and I write 5 to 10 pages at a time without feeling a pinch. Yes, the top is not all that easy to keep in place; but I consider these as trivial issues. Will I recommend this product? - Emphatic Yes. I have already been spreading the word around for anyone who has to take a lot of handwritten notes and will like to transcribe them to the computer without having to go through the rigors of typing on the keyboard. Pay the additional amount for MyScript Notes and you will definitely enjoy your product.
Digital camera Review: Nice product but so-so software Summary: 3 Stars
In general, this product works as advertised. I like writing on a thick pad of paper.
The big problem that I have is the software that only runs on Windows. I want to simply be able to convert my writing to PDF format. It is possible to do with the software, but the PDF looks horrible. Writing is saved as a bunch of points with lines connecting them, which comes out looking unnatural. It is possible to download the raw files, convert them, and process them with other software, but the tool chain is long and complicated. I was able to find a free project written in Java that converts the files to PDF, and I modified the code to perform some smoothing. That works, but it is a pain. I have not used the pad for a while, and I can't even remember where did I save the code...
Another problem with the pad is the pen. The tip moves a little. I tried to stabilize the tip, but it turns out that the pen was "writing" even when I was not pressing it to the paper. The tip moves as the mechanism activates the tracking in the pen when pressed down. It is not a chuge deal, but it makes my writing even worse than it is already.
Digital camera Review: No Support for frozen pad Summary: 2 Stars
I had to return this product before I ever got to use it properly because Acecad has zero support. There is no phone number in the booklet and the website printed on the booklet is under construction. The pad froze after connecting and downloading my first pages to my computer. After disconnecting from the computer, it would not recognize any writing and would not change pages. It would not power off, either, until I removed the batteries.
Luckily the return is fairly easy at Amazon, but I am disappointed not to be able to use the product.
Digital camera Review: Not being used because it is not reliable Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased a Digimemo L2 and liked the ability to transfer my notes directly to files. The problem is that the Digimemo is very sensitive to working with Windows and deleting pages on the Digimemo. If you get it a little wrong on disconnecting it from the computer or deleting files it does not work. File structures get messed up. Then you have to remove batteries to reset (turn it off) and hope that you can reset it. the last time around it would not reset. So, after 4 uses, my Digimemo currently does not work and I cannot reset it. It is not robustly engineered to make it easy to use. The help I got from technical support was not very helpful - it did not make it work. The Digimemo is quite a bit of money for something that is not working.
Digital camera Review: Not reliable Summary: 1 Stars
When the device worked, it was a great product and would have saved me considerable time. I scan my meeting notes on a scanner and was thrilled at the prospect of skipping the scanning step. However, the device did not work. When I tried to transfer the files created by the digital notebook they were corrupt and could not be opened or copied. Now I have to pack it up and return it. It is very frustrating to go to a meeting, take ten pages of notes (being careful to advance the pages, number the pages, etc) and then come back to the office and only be able to retrieve some or none of them. I am not sure who SolidTek is; the device shipped to me was made by ACECAD, a company in Taiwan.
