Digital camera Review: Very Good MP3 Player
Summary: 4 Stars

Bass sounds are boosted. Forget all these reviews that say this unit produces great sound. Anytime you alter the sound reproduction for marketing's sake that brings down the quality a notch. Most of these people either can't tell or don't care about a flat frequency response (a flat frequency response is one that reproduces the sounds the way they were intended by the maker of the music). It's not boosted by a lot so don't fret too much. It's about 2-3db in the neighborhood of 200hz and below.

I have had this player for 3 weeks now including a trip through Mexico. It really helped pass the time being able to listen to music (although I didn't have any movies to watch, this would have been very nice). It managed to survive being in my sweating pockets for the entire week, going through metal detectors, fanny packs, suitcase, etc. I haven't gotten a chance to use it for audiobooks which I'm sure many people will use it for, but I think anyone would be happy with this unit. I also wish it had more than 8GB since I'm nearing my limit, too many movies to put on.

Battery life is very good, I have gotten pretty close to the 33 hrs music or 8 hours video according to my estimations.

I got the clear silicone case to protect the unit which really helps to keep it in place on the desktop when transferring songs or recharging it because this unit is really slippery. An external case is a must have for this unit. Fortunately there are a number of 3rd party vendors that offer just such a peripheral.

Sound customization options abound in this unit for the audio player. There are 5 presets and 2 custom options with 5 band EQ that you can set to your desire. I tried turning the bass down to get a flatter response, but it sounds awkward.

Wish the hold button was in a different place. It's far too easy to accidentally press one of the other buttons while activating the hold (which is essential for this unit). Depressing any button on the front panel will turn it on (btw - my unit did not come pre-charged. It may be necessary to charge it up before using it the first time.) Because of this, if you manage to press one of the buttons on the front panel before you slide the Hold button to ON, the unit will start playing and you won't be able to turn it off (unless you turn the hold off).

Sony has improved design for their earbuds. The silicon buds on these stay in place far better than previous designs, way to go Sony! On this subject these headphones are really great. The buds block out external sounds somewhat, and at the same time, produce clear highs. The midrange is good, and the bass sounds and loud and clear. The look is very sleek, I absolutely love the styling. The left cord is a bit too short however, wish it were longer. The black color of the cord does not look up to date. Guess Sony has too much pride to go iPod white.

I didn't like my default charging options: PC only. Thanks to a nice 3rd party bundle I was able to purchase a clear silicon case as well as a wall and car charger. This came in handy during my vacation as I was able to recharge the unit in my hotel room.

Unit could benefit from FM radio (especially since most other mp3 players have them now).

Upgrading to WMP 11 was a bit of a pain since I'm not used to using it. I wound up duplicating some of the songs being transferred. The interface really isn't the greatest, nor is it very intuitive. This is really the best way to transfer a large number of music files onto the player. For picture and movies, however, I just drag and drop. From what I've read from other sources the movies must be placed in the "Videos" folder, and music must be placed in the "Music" folder, and so on. I believe the files can't be more than 3 deep within the folders or the unit will not recognize the file.

Right now I'm having a ball playing full length movies on this unit (I'm converting American Gangster right now). The hi-res screen is beautiful, and sounds, although they could be stronger, sound clear (this is for the movie player, the music portion sounds fine. My movies might be sounding a bit weaker due to the quality of my ripper or it could be due to other factors).

This is high quality mp3 player that I can recommend to a friend.

Price paid: $111 New - Sony Outlet Store

*** Update ***

I've have had this player for over 6 mos now and it's still working well. If you are debating whether or not to get the silicon case do not debate, just get it. It's essential, just don't buy it from the Sony Store because it's way too expensive. The battery life is insane, there have only been a couple instances when it was dead when I went to turn it on and had to recharge it. The Hold button, another essential function is still way to hard to turn on (when turning the unit off). You have to hold the unit by it's sides to activate the Hold because if you accidentally press any button it will kill the Hold. The small size of this unit and it's earbuds allows me to keep it anywhere.

Digital camera Review: Best MP3 option available out there
Summary: 5 Stars

This MP3 player is best player available out there, for me the key things why I zeroed on to this one are:
-ability to browse through folders like ones does in a computer and organize videos and audio that way; audio upto 7 levels of directories and video 2 or 3
-ability to start from where you left in a track necessary for reading audio books
-ability to forward or backward in a audio book; helps to relisten to something important
-other features like good battery life, large flash, good sound/picture quality, small size

The other player that came close was insignia but was large in size and I did not use it all that much I liked Sony better. Will likely buy one for my wife

Digital camera Review: An Excellent Product: Good Sound Quality and Easy to use
Summary: 5 Stars

This was my first MP3 player. I reviewed several products before settling on this one primarily because of the Sony reputation and because most reviews praised the sound quality. I have to say the product has exceeded my expectations. The sound quality is excellent and it has several customizable equalizers. It is very easy to use, simply hook it up to your computer and drag and click your music from your computer to the MP3 player (I use Windows Media Player). I downloaded 1,135 songs from my CD collection at 192 kbs per song and still had 2 gig of memory left. I also downloaded some photos onto it and they looked real good. The battery life is excellent. I have the player running at my job throughout the day and usually go three days before having to recharge the battery. You simply hook the player up to a PC to recharge the battery and it will also play while recharging. The player is durable because I have dropped mine a couple of times with no adverse affects.

All in all this product is a superb MP3 player and well worth the price. I highly recommend this product to anyone considering a portable media player.

Digital camera Review: excellent player
Summary: 4 Stars

I really like this player:

--Excellent sound quality

--Great user interface

--Compatible with Napster to go

One complaint: I find it's a bit taller than what I would like. I like to clip MP3 players to my belt, (the armband thing isn't for me) and this one is so tall it gets bumped around by your leg movement if you are at the gym cycling, stairclimbing, doing squats, etc. I am looking to find a custom clip that I can mount to the back of mine at a 90 degree angle, so that the player is sideways when clipped in place. So far I haven't found it yet.
