Digital camera reviews of Sony BDP-S1 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Digital camera Review: Beautiful Picture, Crummy Sound
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this player at a CompUSA store closing for a great price, but I wish I hadn't. This is the third time I've been fooled by Sony (Beta and D8). If I could return it, I would. Whether I stay with Blu-ray or switch to HD-DVD, I know it WON'T be a Sony.

Although THE PICTURE IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, the optical audio output is useless on my machine. My surround decoder's Dolby Digital or DTS signal indicator flashes on and off during any playback, and the sound just pops and stutters like leaving every other letter out of this text. The only way I can get any audio from the surround is to select "Downmix PCM" on the set-up for the Sony and get stereo only from the surround, or use the stereo only speakers with the HDMI cable signal in the TV. I did the firmware update, and it solved nothing.

Update, did a second firmware update. Still have to downmix audio on the optical. The machine now takes more than a minute to power on as well. Also, despite Sony having been part of the DVD+R pushers, this will not play + discs, only -. And NO CDs either. Never buying Sony again.

Digital camera Review: Best DVD player out there.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have purchased numerous DVD players throughout the years and the Sony Blu Ray player is by far the best out there. It gives me the most clear HD picture far surpassing the old SD DVD players. It automatically determines what sort of DVD you have put into the machine, 480P and up and then plays it at the highest resolution available up to 1080P!! The Movie Studios are backing this machine and not the HD DVD players, and they have certainly made the right choice.

Digital camera Review: Biggest waste of time
Summary: 1 Stars

Well before, I bash the thing to death let me say, when it did play movies, it was short of breathtaking. My Toshiba AX2 is breathtaking! Anyways, the player performs fairly easily on most Blu-Ray titles. Here come the spin on everything. Recently did a firmware update at the service center because I noticed it was having difficulty playing some movies, and could't retreive any special features. SO they did the upgrades and ensured me the player was profile 1.1 compatible. I took the player home, and it wouldn't load any disks. So I hard reset the player over the phone with the service center, and that seemed to work for about 10 days. Then I would load a new movie it would start playing for about 5 mins the beep really loud at me then display an error prompt then shut down. Fair enough reset the player agian and everything worked fine. Well after about 5 days, I got fed up and took it back to the service center. They could not find anything wrong with the player? I brought in some movies, and they worked for about 5 mins then the problem came back. They took the cover off and watched the player do its thing, and no change? The guy was really stumped. The factory reset the player without any firmware updates. Everything was back to normal. The player worked great!!! Eventually after loading update by update, we seemed to have a working player again, untill the 1.1 profile came into play. The had modifiactions of the last update to see which one would work. Don't really know(not that techie). Finally I had a working player after about 5 hours at the repair depot. I took it home, and rented Pirates, and the new Harry Potter. Well, the gong show continued... I have now determined that the profile 1.1 stuff glitches, and I have since sold the player on EBAY for $199 with the last of my movies... Don't buy it and save your money...

Digital camera Review: Blu Ray is the Real Deal
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been wanting to get a Blu Ray player for a while. After looking at the available models I decided to wait for the Sony BDP-S1. I have had good luck with Sony in the past so I figured I would go with what I know.

I am really glad I did. The PQ is amazing. I didn't think I could get a picture so clear. I have a Sony KLV-V40A10 LCD flat screen. It is only a 1080I but when using the BDP-S1 it is so clear and sharp, its amazing.
I have watched several movies with no lock ups or any other problems. In fact I haven't had the player do anything it isn't suppose to do.

The load time is a little slow. There is a slight delay when giving commands but this is a new tecnology so I don't really have a problem with the few little quirks. The good far out weights the bad.

Digital camera Review: Blu-Ray is the future
Summary: 5 Stars

Blu-ray vs. HD DVD

A Blu-Ray disc is better technology. It is better resolution and can hold more information (1080p vs. HD DVD's 1080i. This has the support of more movie studios and more Manufacturers and will become the standard. If you want the A-track of the future buy HD-DVD.
