Digital camera reviews of Sony BDP-S1 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Digital camera Review: Outstanding Picture and Sound
Summary: 5 Stars

I have used my BDP-S1 for over two months with outstanding results. The picture quality on blu-ray disc such as Casino Royal, The Prestige and Deja Vu is outstanding. The player also upscales standard definition DVD's to 1080p, resulting in much improved video quality. While the BDP-S1 lacks the capability to play music CD's, the primary reason I purchased the player is for movie video and sound quality. The BDP-S1 delivers outstanding results in both areas.

Digital camera Review: Everything you could hope for
Summary: 5 Stars

Easy set-up, brilliant high-definition picture with deep rich color and clarity, uncompressed audio, DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD options, makes for a great deck providing a richly satisfying experience.

Digital camera Review: Beautiful Picture, Crummy Sound
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this player at a CompUSA store closing for a great price, but I wish I hadn't. This is the third time I've been fooled by Sony (Beta and D8). If I could return it, I would. Whether I stay with Blu-ray or switch to HD-DVD, I know it WON'T be a Sony.

Although THE PICTURE IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, the optical audio output is useless on my machine. My surround decoder's Dolby Digital or DTS signal indicator flashes on and off during any playback, and the sound just pops and stutters like leaving every other letter out of this text. The only way I can get any audio from the surround is to select "Downmix PCM" on the set-up for the Sony and get stereo only from the surround, or use the stereo only speakers with the HDMI cable signal in the TV. I did the firmware update, and it solved nothing.

Update, did a second firmware update. Still have to downmix audio on the optical. The machine now takes more than a minute to power on as well. Also, despite Sony having been part of the DVD+R pushers, this will not play + discs, only -. And NO CDs either. Never buying Sony again.

Digital camera Review: Very Pleased
Summary: 5 Stars

Before purchasing the Sony Blu-ray player, I purchased the Philips Blu-ray player. I wasn't very impressed with it's quality; in terms of appearance or operation. The setup menus weren't organized, and the operation of the Philips unit was like operating a standard $150 DVD player. The Sony Blu-ray player is all together different and definately shines in terms of good looks and great operation. It, it's remote, and it's menus are very well laid out, and upon initial setup, it takes you through a setup menu which sets it up just perfectly for whatever HDTV you are using as well as for whatever sound system you are using. I'm not sure what they could do to make it any easier. Also, when you get this player, you also get access to Sony's web site where you can download (for free) any future updates and/or features. This is expensive equipment, but it is QUALITY equipment. Believe me, you won't be disappointed! If you want the best Blu-ray player, this is it.

Digital camera Review: Blu-ray movie availability
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are looking for an honest way to decide which player to buy, try this Go to Netflix and look at the number of Blu-ray movies that are available. You will have to click on the icon and open it to see what formats are available. It will tell you if it is available in DVD, Blu-ray, or HD-DVD. So far I have found 2 movies in HD that are not Blue-ray, and of the 50+ movies in my Que that are Blu-ray maybe 3 or 4 of them are also available in HD-DVD.
