Digital camera reviews of Sony BDP-S1 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Digital camera Review: Lots of Good, with a few Blues
Summary: 4 Stars

I have owned this Sony Blue Ray for just about 6 weeks. I hooked it up to a Bravia 40" via HDMI and used optical for sound. Once you have seen 1080 HD nothing else looks right. It is truly amazing. It was pricey and the DVDs are too. However if you want to see your favorite movies the best way possiable, this unit does it all better than even a theater visit. Old DVDs are upgraded and very passable, better but not like the new disk. The new stuff looks better then it would if it were happening live outside in your backyard.
WONDERFUL, except for a few "blues".
Every once in awhile my player will lock up. The picture freezes and the only way to move on is to shut down and reboot. This seem to only happen with the Blue Ray disk. It is slugish to command when this happens and the reboot process as mentioned before takes about 30 seconds. Like a microwave, this seems forever. I was concerned enough that after 2 weeks I bought the extended warrenty to help save this $1000.00 player just in case I can not clear up the problem at home when it locks up. Knock on wood, Best Buy can and will back this new generation of DVD player. Other then that have fun and marvel at the movies you love. It is one great experience.

Digital camera Review: Simply amazing picture quality
Summary: 5 Stars

I suspect a lot of the negative reviews are by people with an axe to grind in the Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD battle. However, it's now looking likely that there will be no battle, with most studios announcing intentions to release movies on all 3 formats. What made me take the plunge is that Netflix is now offering a good range of both HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs.

The picture quality from this player is simply amazing, almost cinematic in quality. The uncompressed 5.1 channel output sounds great too. Even standard Dolby Digital seems to sound better than on my old player. The player is very well built and quite cool looking. It does seem like current releases have an even better picture than the early ones - like the copy of Fifth Element bundled with the player, this looks slightly lower quality than, for example, Babel (just released).

On the negative side, what most people are referring to as the long load time is in fact, boot up time. To switch on and boot up the player takes about 25s. Once booted the load time for a movie is fairly normal.

I recently bought the Toshiba HD-A20 HD-DVD player, and to my eye the picture on the Sony is slightly better.

In 3 months I've updated the firmware twice on the Sony, and with the latest version it's very stable with no lock-ups. Last time I updated the firmware it was because it refused to play Hellboy, which the update fixed. All part of the fun of being an early adopter...

Digital camera Review: fine perfomance
Summary: 5 Stars

I have this player for over a month now and it has perfomed fine. One of course has to consider that this is a first generation blu-ray player and there is not a wide range of choice. It does take some time to load and unload but it is solid. I compared other brands before I bought this one and they all have the same characteristic.
All in all a fine player

Digital camera Review: A fine player......
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this player about two weeks ago. It delivers an incredible picture. I watched the Last Samurai on blu ray and wow!!! If you can afford this player get it.

I also own the samsung blu ray player 1000. The real difference between the two is load time. The samsung loads a little bit quicker. Otherwise, the PQ is about the same. Toss a coin!

I think in short order everyone will come to discover that blu ray will win the HD wars.
