Digital camera reviews of Sony BDP-S360 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Digital camera Review: Dead after 16 Months
Summary: 1 Stars

About a week ago, I received the "Cannot Play Disc" message when trying to play a BD disc. DVDs still seemed to do okay. It happened intermittently for about a week or so. Today it just refuses to play.

Took it apart and tried to clean it, but no dice. Thought about punching it a few times, but decided to save my knuckles...

Whatever happened to reliability? We also had a Sony DVD player in the early 2000s that crapped out after a few years.

Digital camera Review: Dead, after only a week
Summary: 1 Stars

Please note that my ratings of this player's attributes are based on when the player worked. The overall rating of 1 reflects the fact that the player lost sound and picture after only one week of use.

Granted, this was obviously a defective unit, but it says something about this model's reliability. Even when it did work, disc operations were slow. Fast-forwarding was excruciatingly slow and clunky. And as many other reviewers have commented, the player does not remember the place on the disc where playback was stopped; major annoyance.

Fortunately, Amazon arranged for the return of this dud, and a refund.

Digital camera Review: Decent Blu-Ray Player
Summary: 4 Stars

Let me start by saying, for the price, this is a good Blu-Ray Player. I got it for my bedroom as an extra player. I got tired of moving my PS3 back and forth (yes, I am lazy and didn't want to keep doing this) if I wanted to watch a Blu-Ray movie in my bedroom.

Out of the box, setup was very fast. Initial start time was about 15 to 20 seconds; however, I enabled Quick Start which allows it to start in about 6 seconds. The options are very basic and what you would expect from a low end player. If you already have a PS3, PSP or Sony Television, the menu will be a breeze. If you don't, it takes no time to get used to (which is why it has won awards).

I am used to my PS3, so the load time for a Blu-Ray feels very long. This is a minor complaint and something that doesn't really bother me. I can handle waiting 1-2 minutes for a movie to load as it will stay in my player for the next 2 hours (roughly).

The picture and sound quality is what you would expect from a Blu-Ray player.

My only real complaint is that the remote control has to be pointed directly at the player if you want to use it. As I stated, this is in my bedroom which means I am usually lying down in bed when using it. I have to get up and go to the end of my bed if I need to use the remote. Again, this is a minor complaint and not a deal killer.

If you are looking for a decent Blu-Ray player, this isn't a bad bet, just don't expect anything other than a Blu-Ray player.

(On a side bar, I do have this hooked up via Ethernet. Firmware updates were very easy and only took a few minutes. I haven't tried the Blu-Ray live yet either).

Digital camera Review: Definintely pleased!
Summary: 5 Stars

This was my first blu ray player, and I wasn't sure what to expect from it. I was waiting for the players to lower in price, and when this model became available for less than 125 bucks, I couldn't pass it up.

Setup was simple and straight forward. Initially I had the player installed via a standard video out line, and connected to my 52 inch plasma it was pretty horrible. In fact I would say that the video quality was worse than my cheapo HTIB unit played DVDs. However, after upgrading to a 5 dollar HDMI cable, this thing came into its own!

The standard DVD upscaling was simply majestic. Colors were vivid and bright and objects appeared to jump out at me. I popped in a blu ray and wow.. I won't go back to DVD anytime soon, if ever.

I don't own a playstation, but from what I've seen on TV, the setup screen is identical to that of the PS3. If one can navigate the PS3 menu, this one will be simple as well..

An added positive note to this guy is its ability to play pretty much anything I've thrown at it, copied DVDs and blu rays, "fake" blu rays burned onto a DVD-9, etc.. It simply works..

Others have listed that this player has slow load times, but I don't find it too painful. I install the disk and let it load while I'm getting situated in my chair. Others have complained about the lack of an eject button on the remote, but I think that's pretty pointless as well, considering I have a wife, and she can change the disc just fine. (Sarcasm alert)

The load times are drastically quicker if the "quick load" function is enabled. This basically keeps the player in a low power state all the time..

Bottom line, I love this player. Sony has never let me down, and this unit is no exception. I have been tempted to buy a 2nd unit for the bedroom, but my wife already complains that I spend too much money on electronics and has begged me to hold off on that! Maybe it will drop to below 100 bucks soon, and then I will buy at least 1 more of these. I don't see a need to spend money on a more expensive unit...

Digital camera Review: Disappointing Quality from a Presumed Blu-Ray Leader
Summary: 2 Stars

Picture- and sound-quality are excellent. However, it has a number of significant problems and I'm returning this item.
- Its remote is one of the worst I've seen, with tiny, non-backlit buttons placed very close in parallel to each other, and which cause you to press chapter skip when you meant to fast forward/reverse, and vice versa. It does not even have eject button.
- One DVD playback, sometimes it resumes from the last point of play, and sometimes it does not.
- It's hypersensitive to finger prints / minor scratches on DVDs, and often freezes (which requires powering off the unit and on again), where the same DVD plays fine on my PC and on my regular DVD player.
- The buttons on the player unit itself are not backlit, so forcing you to turn on the room lights to eject disc, etc.
