Digital camera reviews of Sony Cybershot DSCW80 7.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom and Super Steady Shot (Silver)Digital camera Review: Not worth with the money with several competing cameras Summary: 2 Stars
This camera sucked.... I'll admit that while it captures fore-front details well and the face-detection works nicely, it certainly fails to create beautiful pictures without cloudiness or haze. I returned this camera and purchased the Casio Exilim z1080 10mp... wow.. what a world of difference.. same price, but much, much better product!!!
Digital camera Review: Once bitten twice shy Summary: 1 Stars
Could you imagine that I bought this model DSC-W80 Silver twice. I went for it despite the reviews that warned that the pictures are not so good and you immediately realize that when you fix the pictures using softwares such as Adobe Photo Downloader. The only +ve point about Cybershot cameras are that they are bit user friendly.
First time I bought from Amazon, it worked fine for a week and then the Lens cover won't open fully. I called up Sony service and read their FAQs (they have this stupid suggestion of "resetting the battery" which is like taking out the battery, charge it fully and reinsert it) but to no avail. Needless to less it didn't work because when the problem started the battery was charged fully anyway.
I bought the same model from J&R NYC Store personally. I come home and start the camera, and lo, the very first screen that lets you set the Date/Time was showing the "variable names" instead of English Sentences, something like "ID_STR_HOME_SET_CLOCK not...". Today I returned this camera.
It's only because I bought the cameras from these reputed stores that are good enough to return your money that I have the courage to buy another one from them. But as far as Sony is concerned its certain that their cameras are poor both on hardware and software front. And they still have the guts to say that the company doesn't refund money, talk to the retailer.
Don't waste your money on Sony Cybershot, don't be deceived by their good looks.
Digital camera Review: Our first digital, what a delight! Summary: 5 Stars
This is our first digital and we found it so easy to learn how to use. The screen is so clear, with no need to remember what all the dials are for, it shows them on the screen if you like. The tools and buttons make sense with what they are for, not counterintuitive. I took a short video which was great but took up a lot of memory so limited the amount of pictures I could take after that. But the battery lasted way longer than needed, which was great since we were away from home. Recommend getting an extra battery and memory card not included so you can take as many pictures as you like without worrying. Pictures are crystal clear with people's faces so detailed. We love it.
Digital camera Review: Overall, disappointed Summary: 2 Stars
My wife bought this camera about 10 months ago, in (long advance) preparation for a trip this winter. She has been using a Nikon Coolpix 8700 that she's very pleased with, but wanted something pocketable. She has some balance issues, so the "Steady Shot" image stabilization was attractive. After reading reviews in a leading consumer publication, she bought the DSC-W80.
Positives: Outdoors, it does very well. Colors are warm and true. The image stabilization works well (I have a mild hand tremor, so I'm a good tester...) Sharpness is acceptable.
Negatives: Indoors, not so hot. As has been posted elswhere, when the camera is faced with dim illumination, the in-camera processing creates a lot of noise, which obliterates most detail in the images. The flash is feeble, and somewhat slow to fire. It commonly produces a "hot spot" in the center of the image, rather than even lighting. The menu system is much less intuitive than on the Nikons we both have, or on some of the Canons I've been looking at. One of the strangest things I have run into is that you can set the size of the captured file (i.e. number of MP), but not the display resolution. For example, a 7MP image comes up on screen as a 72 px/inch, 42.67 X 32 inch image. If you bring that image up on screen in Photoshop, and zoom in to 100%, you're looking at an oddly pixelated image for what should be your highest quality setting. The only cure I've found for on-screen viewing is to run it through Photoshop and resize it both by size and by pixels/inch. Now maybe that's just a Sony oddity that has only stymied me, but I thought it was worth putting out there. Hopefully this is useful information for you.
Digital camera Review: Poor image quality in medium to low light, hard to avoid blur Summary: 1 Stars
We bought this camera as smaller alternative to our Digital Rebel SLR which is roughly 7MP as well. We wanted something smaller to take on quick trips, snapshots of the kids, etc... We were very dissapointed with the image quality, especially indoors where less light is available. Most of the images came our red and grainy, many were blurry. I have experience with photography and tried multiple settings, but the image quality still suffered. We are going to try to return this camera and get a point and shoot Canon and maybe spend a little bit more. The convienence and form factor are not worth it if the image quality is terrible. We should have stuck with Canon in the first place. :-(
