Digital camera reviews of Sony D-EJ109 Portable CD Walkman

Digital camera Review: A nice Walkman
Summary: 4 Stars

If I am to be the beneficiary, I never rush into buying things, and the acquisition recently of a portable CD player was yet another example. I had for many years a very serviceable Panasonic, but without an anti-shock capability. Being tired of having to hold it in my hand while going on my walks, I "broke down" and splurged for a new one with the anti-chock feature. I found a good choice of models at my friendly electronic super-store, and eventually settled for the SONY D-EJ109. This was one and a half year ago, and this Walkman still works like the very first day I used it: very well.

This CD digital audio player was in my price range, looked good, and of course offered the G-PROTECTION function.

The player looks like a small silver "flying saucer," 5-3/8 in. in dia. Xx 29/32 in. thick, and weighs 6.4 oz. It operates with 2 AA batteries (3 V total) (not included). It uses a GaAlAs laser diode, whose output is 44.6 microjoules (pretty small), as measured under an industry standard method.

The player comes with adequate headphone and an instruction sheet. Its operation is straight forward, and just in case, the instructions are pretty clear. The controls are located on the top surface and in the thickness of the machine.

On the Top Surface. There is a window, 1 in. x 1/2 in, displaying the menu, is located at the center. On the same surface, located roughly 90 degrees apart on a ring, 2-1/4 in. dia., are

- AMS/search control to locate the beginning of a track, forward
- Play/Pause
- AMS/search control to locate the beginning of a track, backward
- Stop play (power)

There are 3 small buttons slightly protruding from the surface, located in a quadrant on a 3 - 1/4 dia. circle. Their functions are

- To display the menu in the center window. Press once displays the track number and remaining time. Press twice displays the number of tracks left and the time remaining on the CD. Press thrice displays the track number and the elapsed time (normal display). Also press to enter the menu and the selection
- To activate the P Mode. (play mode/repeat/bookmark)
- Sound. Press repeatedly to enhance the bass response (3 levels)

In the Thickness of the Player. We have

- The open/close switch to install the CD in the player
- A jack input for the headphone jack
- A two-button volume control (increase and decrease)
- A jack for a DC 4.5 V external power input

Using the "bookmark" feature, one can add bookmarks up to 99 tracks for each CD, for up to five CD. Using the same button, one can program the CD player to play up to 64 tracks in any order.

Additionally, one can program the CD player to stop playback automatically after 5 to 95 minutes. The instruction sheet tells you clearly (miracle?) how to set your display menu.

Results.

Pluses. I found the operation of this portable CD player straight forward. The sound in very good, good bass response, but I can not judge too well the high end of the frequency response, because my ears are not those of a young person. The G-protection works remarkably well. Now I just carry the CD player in my pocket. This brings a point which I thought would turn out to be a problem: with the controls on the top surface and some of them protruding, I envisioned the inadvertent activation of some of them while carrying the player in my pocket. This does not happen. Finally the batteries seem to last forever.

Minuses. The silver paint seems to be "flimsy." During one of my walks, I happened to carry in the same pocket 2 spare AA batteries, which apparently rubbed gently against the top surface of the player. When I took it out of the pocket, the paint had been somewhat rubbed off at different locations near the outside edge of the player. The amplifier is a little weak. To hear the music in a rather quite environment, I still have to set the volume to near maximum; 8 to 9 ++ (the max). As mentioned above, my ear response to high frequencies (8 KHz and above) is rather limited, but below 8 KHx it is near normal, and certainly normal below 5KHz, where most of the power is.

The punch line. Overall, a very nice portable CD player.
