I Bought this Camcorder for My Girlfrend's Daughter. They live in the Philippines and are very happy to have this Camcorder. One thing I would suggest is that You get a Memory Stick along with the extra DVDs and don't forget the Battery charger and a Carrying case. It is really to bad You are not told up front everything that is needed for this Camcorder, but then they may scare a lot of buyers off. When my oldest daughter had her first child (it was also my first grandchild) two years ago I bought her a digital camera and printer. I have been since rewarded by receiving many photos of my favorite (and only) grandchild.
Now, for my granddaughter's second birthday, I bought her this video camera. After reading many of the reviews for this and other camcorders on Amazon I picked the Sony DCR-DVD610 because met all of the needs that I had for a camcorder that I would give as a gift:
1. POPULAR. Almost everyone who purchased this item was very happy with it. This was not so with all of the best-selling camcorders, even those at twice the price.
2. EASY. I wanted to get her one that was fairly easy to use. I read the instruction book on-line and felt that this fit the bill.
3. DVDs. It was important to me that it used some sort of DVD as the primary recording media since I feel that it is more archival than tape and more secure than a hard drive only.
4. PRICE. Even though I would have been willing to spend more, I was hoping for something under $400.
I also purchased an accessory kit (which included a bag, an extra battery and 2 DVDs) and then some extra Sony brand DVDs (after reading some of the reviews I decided to stick with the Sony brand in order to avoid the message that pops up when you use a different brand of DVDs).
So far my daughter and her husband have been VERY happy with this gift and I am hoping see some great videos of my beautiful granddaughter who lives several states away.

Digital camera Review: A great camcorder for home movies

This inexpensive and compact DVD camcorder exceeds expectations in video and sound quality. With the option of recording direct to mini-DVD, which can be viewed in both standard and blu-ray DVD players, or on a memory stick for viewing on a PC, this camcorder is great for creating general home movies. This is the first camcorder I've had since the now "classic" days of VHS video and the first thing I noticed is how seamless the stops and starts in recording are on playback. Its best feature may be its excellent 40x optical zoom lens. The downside is that its battery does not last very long. I have found that it needs to be replaced or recharged shortly after approximately 30 minutes of recording. I purchased a second battery for it, but I plan to buy at least one more. Regardless, this is a nice camcorder for capturing those special family moments.Digital camera Review: A great purchase!

I bought this for my daughters graduation present.
We were able to use it to record her graduation; she used it to record some memories of her brother & sister visiting for the occasion. She was able to operate it easily without confusion, I am not one who can normally be trusted to purchase anything electronic,but; I was able to make this well thought out purchase with the help of comparing similar items on Amazons' website. The value for the price is awesome! I was able to purchase the starter kit & extra discs along with the camcorder for the same price as just the camcorder itself in surrounding stores in my area.

I bought this as a birthday present for my wife and she loves it. The price was right, it was easy to use, good video and sound quality, small and compact ect..It has alot of great features. i'm no director but I managed to get some nice videos done..a good purchase.
