Digital camera reviews of Sony DCR-SR85 1MP 60GB Hard Drive Handycam Camcorder with 25x Optical Zoom

Digital camera Review: Sony DCR-sr85
Summary: 4 Stars

Digital camera Review: Still not completely impressed
Summary: 2 Stars

Great Technology! But after downloading the movie files to my computer, using SONY software to make my movie, and create a DVD the end product video quality was no better than a VHS tape. I was expecting a lot more clarity being a SONY HD Camcorder.
I'll give an update to this if I can figure out the clarity issue and change my revue to five stars.

16 Jan 2010:
Well after recording, downloading, editing recorded movies and transferring it to DVD I found some interesting things from this video camera. The recorder does have a hard time with focusing during slight or low light environments. It will thus make image quality seem grainy or out of focus. I guess one would have to get a more professional video camera if one wanted to film during low lighting environments without the need of an obnoxious Headlight. Also when going from close targets to telephoto and capturing scenes farther away, the camera has problem to focus in immediately or clearly, unless of course it is a bright shinny day outside. However for a camera which can capture hours of recorded data, it's good. The touch screen is cool, but editing should be left to when you transfer your movies to the computer. Also deleting movies on the touch screen can be time consuming, so I personally do that after downloading family movies onto my computer. Sound quality capture is great! However don't use the photo capture if you want a quality photograph. Overall for a general video recorder it's good.
So I raising my previous rating from two stars to three stars.

Digital camera Review: Very Nice!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Sony DCR-SR85 is a very nice camcorder for a very good value. It has been discontinued and replace with another model, hence the good pricing out there.

The quality of its video and audio on an HDTV is better than expected, and it is very easy to use. I considered purchasing an HD camcorder as I have HDTV, but they are considerably more expensive and the file system is more difficult to edit and work with. The quality this camera generates is more than acceptable, and HD just wasn't that important to me.

A hard drive camera is the only way to go. The convenience of having 60GB of storage space (plus the Memory Stick) is wonderful. If desired, you can record your video or photos to the Memory Stick, remove the stick and easily insert into a USB card reader to view or transfer your pictures to your computer. Either way, you have to hook "something" up to your computer, so you might as well just use the supplied USB cable and transfer photos or video from the camera's hard drive. The camcorder acts just like an external hard drive when plugged in to your computer, and it's simple as can be to use Windows Explorer (file manager) to move (copy) the Sony's files to your computer.

One of the key items to keep in mind when looking at camcorders is the recording and file format it utilzes. The Sony DCR-SR85 records in MPG2, which is very easy to use and immediately compatible with Windows players, such as Media Player etc. There is no need to install the supplied Picture Browser software. You're actually better off not installing it. The video can be played immediately. Unlike some other camcorders, the Sony keeps the video and audio together in the same file. Some cameras have a separate audio track that makes editing more work. There are many ways to go to edit and burn to DVD if desired (Ulead DVD MovieFactory) that are far better than using the supplied software.

It's a terrific camera. Get one while there still available and you can get a good deal on them. You won't be disappointed.

Digital camera Review: Very Pleased
Summary: 5 Stars

I searched and searched for a very good camera at a decent price. I read all the reviews on various cameras and found this camera to be the best. It is a great camera. I absolutely love it. It is easy to use, affordable, and the video and the still pictures are good. The still pictures aren't 100%, but it doesn't take a bad still picture. The software that comes with the camera is easy to use - downloading is a breeze. It has been a wonderful investment.

Digital camera Review: Very good camcorder for the price
Summary: 5 Stars

I like the clear images and touch screen on the camcorder. Very comfortable in my hand and easy to adjust while operating it. Uploading to my PC was a snap, even though it took a little longer than I like.
