Digital camera reviews of Sony DVP-FX930/W 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, WhiteDigital camera Review: Best Picture Quality Available, Worthy of a Sony Product Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this player as a replacement for a three years old Philips portable player that stopped to recognize some discs, made plenty of noise and it became a hassle every time my four years old daughter tried to use it as we didn't know if it will work. After using that Philips for that long, I regret I didn't moved to this Sony before, not sure why as I own a Sony Wega TV and for the price you can't beat the image quality of that TV. Maybe I didn't look at picture quality as important on a portable DVD player? Anyway, here it goes.
The three greatest attributes of this player are in that order: Picture quality, the ability of the laser reader to read whatever you throw at it and the free-angle movable screen. The picture quality is amazing, movies look sharp and with high resolution on a wide screen format. I put my former Philips and this Sony side to side and the quality of the Sony was noticeable pretty easy. Not only black looks like true black (a challenge for these type of screens) and white looks very white, but the quality of the picture remains intact no matter how fast the movements are in the movie, the response time is comparable to high quality computer screens. Depth angle, the ability to still get a good picture even if not looking directly in front of the screen is simply amazing. And once you reach a point when you can not see it that good anymore, just swivel the screen and you're done. Overall colors were bright and real, the quality of the picture is just unbeatable
Then is the laser reader. Simply amazing. Have you ever looked at the favorite DVD of a four year old with your glasses on and against a good light? Well, if you can differentiate among the thousands (or millions?) of scratches, every finger fingerprints -even from the toes- all kind of dust and hair and sticky accumulations of all type of past chewed and now dry food, you are simply my hero. You get the picture; this DVD can be easily thrown into a Biohazard container. So I took my daughter's copy of The Incredibles which the Philips can't read and even my home's DVD player had a hard time reading it, and this Sony just passed through all the layers of unknown hazardous material and started playing it within seconds. More than amazed I was shocked. Is that good. You can also shake the player for good and bump it hard while playing a movie and it won't skip. I think Sony did a pretty good job on what is an important attribute of a portable player that more often that not gets neglected
The free angle screen is good to a point that you can put the DVD wherever you like and you still manage to get the best of the picture, it can rotate and turn into many different positions, and it's very flexible and makes the life of the user much easier. I was also surprised by the remote control's ability to work even if you are not directly pointing at the screen (the sensor is in the screen I believe). For example, you can use the hold button to make sure your four year old in the back of the car doesn't mess with the buttons while playing the movie and operate the DVD using the remote from the front seat. I couldn't believe when we did that, particularly comparing it with the remote of my Sony TV which doesn't work if you don't point straight to the screen
The construction is also solid, vey hard plastic and materials that look like they can resist plenty of beating, as in fact mine had in the hands of my daughter
The bad? Nothing is perfect, and the main complain I have is that the door to the DVD can open too easily, you can touch the button slightly even by accident and the door will open with the DVD spinning inside, which is not a good thing and it's even not recommended. Also the volume buttons, even if they work by sliding your fingers which is very innovative for a DVD player, can be tricky to use and ore often than not you end up with the wrong level of volume, not the one you wanted, having to go over and over again to set it. Not too bad but also not too good. Some people have complained about the lack of certain type of connectors or the inability of the player to play certain DVD formats, but for the day to day use and for watching movies on the go without the bell and whistles other players can offer at about the same price, this Sony works perfectly, with an image quality none of these other players can replicate
