I got this unit as an "open box" on amazon, and it has pleased us in every way.
Is it a high end blue ray player? No, but we sure didn't pay for one.
The remote works great, and it interfaced w/o issue with our Sony TV. Unexpected bonus.

We are extremely pleased with the Sony DVD player. It is a great little DVD player-we are using it in the master bedroom and it is a very sleek looking player with all the features we need for a spare DVD. Seems like I'm the only person who will praise this player for its MP3 playback. I do have a portable MP3 player, but I also have all of my MP3s burned to CD, not only for backup, but for playback as well. Pop an MP3 CD in, and its like having a 10 disc changer. The on screen display is great, as it displays ENTIRE names and titles, something my other DVD player could not do. Everything was abbreviated. It also displays ID3 tag info. Sounds great. Another nice touch is after about 15 minutes of continuous playback, a screensaver comes up. Again, my other DVD player displayed the menu screen as long as the CD was in the player. I will echo other comments about being disappointed with no optical output.
As far as DVD playback, I find that to be excellent as well. I did buy an "upscaling" player with HDMI prior to this one. I did not see anything to get excited about, and personally I think upscalers are a sham. So, in my opinion, component video out is the best you'll see in lieu of going all the way to Blu-Ray. I don't use Netflix, and all of my DVDs and CDs are handled with care, so this playback of scratched up discs is something I wouldn't know about. Personally, I think it's hilarious that there is a need for such a feature. But, most people are negligent in their care of discs, so go figure. But, this is a great player, and I think its MP3 functionality should be praised. It's a shame that it would be overlooked. BTW, does a great job with JPGs on CD as well. If it is missing anything, it would be CD+G playback. But, I can live without that.

If you are looking for an inexpensive player, this is a great choice. After buying an off brand at a nationwide store, which broke after three plays, I bought this DVD player from Sony on Amazon and it works just fine. Standard shipping was fast and obviously the DVD player arrived in excellent condition.Digital camera Review: Great value for the price

The Sony DVD player works fine out of the box. I have had a few low end DVD players and they all start out OK but stop working fairly quickly. The Sony has been going for a while now with now problems. It is simple and elegant, stands up to kids and plays clear DVDs. What more c ould you ask?
