Digital camera reviews of Sony DVP-NS57P/B Progressive Scan DVD Player, Black

Digital camera Review: Highly recommend!
Summary: 5 Stars

I visited an electronics store recently and brought a few DVDs (both -R and +R) that I made on my PC. We hooked up 3 players selling for about the same price. The Philips player kept stalling and pausing and then stopped completely after a few minutes. The Toshiba SD-4000 was the same, couldn't play my homemade DVDs. I got a little worried.

Finally, the Sony DVP-NS57P worked perfectly, no problem at all! I'm very, very happy and can now play any of my DVDs. It's definitely the best for me and for anyone not concerned with features most people don't use.
So, I've saved you a lot of hassle of testing machines. Get this one.

Digital camera Review: I love this DVD player!
Summary: 4 Stars

I have a small hdtv in my room upstairs. Normally, I watch DVDs on my laptop since I only watch during the weekends. However, I get tired of loading up the computer just to watch a movie. So I decided to get a cheap dvd player that can play at 480P. I got this model.

There are several good things and bad things about this player. Most of the complaint though, will probably not apply to everyone:

* The player is outstanding. It plays my scratched dvd fairly well.

* It comes with cables only for the sdtv, not hdtv. I had to spend an extra 20 bucks to get the cables for an hdtv. I am not very happy about that.

* No Closed Caption on hdtv. I'm not exactly sure if Closed Captioning is disabled for all HDTV or if this is the fault of my TV not allowing closed captioning on HDTV or if it's the fault of this dvd player. So I won't hold it against the player but instead warn users who wish to get a player for their hdtv. I know I can enable caption when I use the SDTV line, but when I got the HDTV line, I could no longer view close caption and have to rely on subtitles which may or may not be presented on dvds. It's a minor inconvenience, but I guess I just have to turn up the tv and hope people in the house don't get annoyed.

Overall, good dvd player. I will enjoy a lot of great movies upstairs in my room while others in my house hold don't have to worry about me taking up the main tv. Very good, cheap, and easy to use.

Digital camera Review: I'm Satified
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently purchased a $29 Magnavox and then tried to play a used copy of Rush in Rio on it. The sound was so horrible I ended up taking it back and trading up for this Sony. It has a lot more audio options than the Magnavox, or should I say, it HAS audio options! lol The sound and picture are phenomenal on my standard TV with stereo sound. I've only had it one day but the reviews here are good and I anticipate it will easily meet my needs. If it plays that Rush DVD it should play anything.

Digital camera Review: Ideal for 480p Res or less
Summary: 4 Stars

Pros

Sony has no trouble playing problem disks that plagued my other players. But, it also doesn't play a few disks my other players struggle to play.

Sony menu functions are very well integrated compared to the hodge-podge look of lesser brands making it easier to use this player without reading a manual.

Installation is very easy. Plug the cables depending on what you use, component video, digital or line-outs. The power cable is not removable. There is no HDMI jack, since its maximum resolution is 480p via component video.

The case is all black, with 4 buttons difficult to see against the black case. The DVD tray opens slower, but is quieter when it runs. The ELD display is far clearer and more informative about the status of the disk or the chapter playing.

Images, sharpness and colors are superb on default settings. Sony includes manual or preset image adjustments to maximize its output.

When powered ON, the Sony will resume playback from whence you stopped for up to 6 separate disks.

It has has on/off and volume control for TVs in the DVD remote.

Variable play from 1.4x to 0.5x speed, but with sound.

Sony has sound function that takes the basic output of 2 speakers and tries to emulate surround sound.

Sony will create thumbnails of each DVD chapter independent of the DVD menus. This helps quite a bit in home made DVDs that have no menus.

Cons:

Remote is well laid out, with similar function buttons set near each other but in opposite directions for opposite functions, i.e., rewind left, forward, right. However, like many el-cheapo DVD players, the buttons are too small and one cannot differentiate functions purely by feel. You have to gaze at the buttons to read the function.

All advanced functions are controlled by the remote, so its indispensable.

Conclusion:
480p quality is good enough to appreciate on 32" or less HDTV sets until you upgrade to a 46" and over 1080p DVD player. Although Sony explicitly mentions it has support for copy protection schemes built right into the data [ e.g. the video file or image, not just the disk], I have not yet encountered data that would not play.

Digital camera Review: Insufficient output options
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this unit because it was a Sony, and a replacment for an older unit that died.
When it arrived it did not have S-video output, or optical audio output for Dolby 5.1.

I was able to swap it for another unit in the house but now my big screen equipment does not match, and the RCA unit is not fully controllable by the Sony Remote Commander.

No big deal, but it would have been nice to have a description of the output options in the product description.

The more expensive models had some "new" type of output that my 60' TV does not support.
