Digital camera Review: Can other portable DVD players DO this?
Summary: 4 Stars

My absolutely favorite thing about this player is that you can stop your movie, turn the player off, unplug it, and then turn it back on and your movie will resume from the same place you stopped it!!! I've had about 3 other portable DVD players--which did not do this--and I wonder if this is an unusual feature...

Other things I like about this player:

1. The battery attaches underneath the unit--not behind, like other units I've had, which saves space (I haven't used the battery much; I prefer to plug it into my car, etc., so I can't say how good the battery life really is).

2. The remote can turn the unit on and off.

3. Swivel screen is nice.

4. The buttons are all on the top part of the unit, by the screen, so you can easily operate all the functions even when you have the screen swiveled.

5. The size of the remote is good for me--it's a bit bigger so I don't lose it, but it's not so big that I can't stuff it into my carrying case.

6. Unit automatically turns off after a certain amount of time not in use.

7. The player seems able to play recordable and re-recordable DVDs. (I've tried RW+/- and R+/-). Another portable I had wouldn't play every type.

8. This player also seems less "sensitive." I've played movies on this player that wouldn't play on my home DVD player or another portable DVD player my family owns (I've only ever tried Region 1 DVDs).

I've had this product almost a year now. Unfortunately, I can only give it 4 stars because it did break once on me. Fortunately, I had a replacement plan from where I bought it--I think the unit was sent back to Sony under warranty, and it came back perfect (after almost a month). Otherwise, I really like this player. I was looking through some of the other reviews, and I can understand how people would say that the screen can seem a little dark or the glass-type cover can cause a bit of glare in certain conditions, but it never really bothered me that much. The picture clarity and sound seem comparable to other players I've had. If anything, the picture is slightly sharper than in my other players. I would definitely buy this player again, but because of the bit of trouble I had, I would make sure I bought some sort of warranty too!

Digital camera Review: Can't go Wrong
Summary: 4 Stars

My review is based upon using this DVD player for young kids (2-5).
This is my third DVD player for my 3 year old son, Why you ask, well you must look at it this way...Each one has its purpose.
I have a 10"JVC for trips in my truck, a 6" Phillips from Wall Mart for casual dining, and now I have this Sony because of the flip screen. As my son got older he began to mash the buttons and open the trays on all of our players. When you filp the screen around on this player the buttons are less noticeable so he does not fool with them as much but the big advantage is that he cannot open the tray. The battery life far exceeds the other two players, the screeen quality is much better, and it is about the same weight as the Phillips. I only gave it 4 stars due to the sound from the speaker which is not loud enough for anyone to hear on the average airplane. This is easily overcome with a cheap pair of headphones and the sound is plenty loud from there (there are two headphone jacks). If you get this for your kids I would suggest a good quailty case with plenty of room for the plugs, dvd's etc. Buy the case once you have the player in hand, I made the mistake of ordering the one suggested on Amazon and it was useless.

Digital camera Review: Comparison between FX810 and FX820
Summary: 3 Stars

Over the Memorial Day weekend, I toured a few electronics shops near my home to test portable DVD players. I took my own headphones and favorite DVDs (both retail ones and ones burned by my DVD recorder) with me.

At first I liked FX810, meeting what I had expected from a portable DVD player under $200. FX810 played all kinds of discs I tested and has a good picture quality, a compact body, and long battery life. But once I tested FX820, I fell in love with the newer model. FX820 has a much better monitor and bigger sound from the speakers while keeping all good features of the old model.

In short, FX820 exceeded my expectation. The price difference between the two models is between 20 to 50 dollars. I was lucky enough to find a shop in Montana which sold FX820 for $149.95 INCLUDING shipping. Another concern about FX810 is its durability. I saw several returned units at a local Circuit City and one at display did not work at all. There is no way to predict the durability of the newer model, but I hope SONY has solved the problems of FX810 and made FX820 more durable.

If you are wondering which model should you buy, I would recommend FX820 over FX810.

Digital camera Review: Crappy quality
Summary: 1 Stars

We purchased ours for our daughter to watch in the car. It hangs on the back of the passenger's head rest. After a few months it failed so we sent it for repair. We received it back and two weeks past the 1 year mark it stopped working again. We contacted Sony to learn that they'll repair it for $120 or send us a REBURBISHED one for $150-$167. You can buy a new one online for $169 with a new one year warranty.

Digital camera Review: DVD Frequently Freezes
Summary: 1 Stars

I've had the same experience as so many others here, I wish I had read these before buying. It will be play along just fine for awhile, then suddenly just freeze up. Turning it off, reinserting the DVD does not help because of the memory feature of returning to the point where you left off--it just returns to the "stuck" point. The only way to fix it is to insert a different DVD, wait for it to start, then remove and replace the first one and try to return to the place where it froze. Then it may well freeze again again somewhere else after a few minutes. or it may be fine for the rest of the movie. I've tested the same DVD in my regular, stationary DVD player and it works just fine, so it's not the DVD. Also, it happens on too many DVDs for it to be a problem with the disk. I've just wasted nearly $200.00.
