I bought this product to use on our honeymoon flight to Tahiti (8.5 hours). It was perfect. The battery lasted the entire 6 hours it stated it would, the screen is clear, and it is very easy to work. I bought this (for too much) at a local store because I found out the airline we were taking the next day to China didn't have individual TV screens. If you've ever taken a LOOOOOOONNNNG flight with that you know you'll never be able to be content with the old aisle screens again.
It was a life-safer. On the way there I messed up and didn't have the correct plug adapter to plug into the plane (it was in my baggage), but it still ran for nearly 5 hours -- I admit, though, that I turned down the backlight as far as I could hoping to spare the battery. You could still see fine.
I will agree that sound is a problem. It's nearly impossible to hear through the speakers, and using normal earphones (which is what my partner had) on a plane make it very difficult to hear. However, I used a set of Sony noise-cancelling headphones, and there was no problem at all. I strongly recommend using noise-cancelling headphones with this unit.
It's a nice-looking, well-built and easy to use unit. Sony REALLY needs to look at the sound issues to make it perfect.

My husband and I researched many of the portable DVD players to buy for our (now) 20 month old son for travel. The Sony by far is absolutely great! The picture is good and the screen is plenty big---our little boy loves it. It's surprisingly durable too since we've only taken it on 2 trips so far, it has been banged around, but does not appear to have any damage to the outside at all. This was a great price too on Amazon.com since it was selling for almost [$...] more through competitors. We read reviews regarding sound quality---we haven't seen ANY that has loud, wonderful sound quality. The player is small, so you can expect tiny speakers too--for all of you complainers out there, what do you expect? I believe these were built more for having headphones to watch, although our 20 month old won't wear them at this point, he can hear the sound fine while traveling. I purchased this portable DvD player as my old one got burned out. This is a very sleek in design. Very easy to operate. The battery life is good, can stand upto 5 hrs. It can play everything from MP3, CD, Burned DvD, VcD. The sound quality is good enough inside the vehicle. The resolution of the screen is sufficient enough you can ask for a portable player. The amazing thing of this player is the swivel screen, so you can hang it in front seat. For a great price I got from Amazon, I couldn't ask for anything else. Nothing is perfect so I give it 4 star.
