I have been using this radio for the last year and it is very durable. I can pick up distant radio stations and the sound quality is good. I have used this radio while doing yardwork. I accidentally got the radio muddy and hosed off the radio (not recommended). The radio is still fine. I just love this little portable radio. I am amazed that China manufactures such a great product because most of the radios coming out of China are junk! I guess Sony has good quality control. I wanted a simple battery-powered FM radio to pick up a local low-power station. I have had problems receiving this station with many other radios, but this one does the job with flying colors. I suspect that part of the reason for its good performance is that it uses analog tuning and is monophonic.

This is a basic portable radio that receives and plays very well for the price. I was surprised at how well the tuner picked up stations and signal separation was very good. Sound is very good. I am also a fan of slide rule tuning. It is more efficient, making batteries last longer. Tuning on this radio was very tight, which was surprising for the price. The only issue is the back panel that closes the battery compartment. Rattles with loud volumes. This is such a simple and reliable product that it is ironically very difficult to find in a brick and mortar store. Amazon had it and it fit my criteria of being both battery and hard wire powered, being compact and providing reliable AM/FM reception. I bought one of these radios about two and a half years ago. It's been my companion through endless hours of yard work and watching the kids play outside.
This radio is built tough by today's standards and has strong reception on both AM and FM bands.
I have no idea how long a set of batteries lasts in this thing, but I know its a very long time. During the Summer I must use this radio an hour or more a day, and battery changes happen many months apart. Also, the little batteries it uses are cheap! You can buy huge numbers of them for next to nothing if you shop around a bit or belong to a warehouse kind of store.
My main use for this radio is outside in a suburban area. Only very specialized radios will work well downtown or in a metal framed office building. These radios tend to cost more. Don't expect this radio to work well under those conditions.
However, if you want to listen to your favorite talk radio show while you're hanging out on your deck or pulling weeds, this is about as good as it gets at this price point.
Finally, it's got a speaker that's good enough so you can listen for hours without the kind of listener fatigue that can build up while listening to a cheap radio.
