Digital camera Review: Best Radio For The Dollar

After reading all the positive reviews for this great little radio I bought one for my brother last year as a Christmas present. Naturally I had to try it out before giving it to him and was most impressed by it's performance. Our local Sears store had them on sale for $23.95 and I had a $40.00 gift card burning a hole in my pocket so I bought one. After using it for three weeks I'm glad I did. It performs well on all bands(well the weather band is not so hot but it's tough to get here) the fidelity is very good and the analog tuner is as smooth and precise as any I've found.The volume control is very linear in it's operation and the L.E.D. tuning light I've found to be usefull as well. My main interest in radio is A.M. dx'ing and after comparing it to other more expensive radios in this area such as the C Crane CC Radio Plus,Kaito KA-1103,and G.E.Super Radio II, this Sony will hang in there with all of them. If you want to get in on A.M. long range listening and don't want to invest alot of money this radio is your best choice. I would recommend it over the double the price Super Radio III which has never impressed me. For the price you get alot of radio for the money. It's no slouch on F.M. either. I purchased this radio back in March 2007. Clearly, it is 100% terrific. However, apparently I am going to have to toss it in the trash on February 17, 2009 when digital television hits the airwaves. A total pity!Incidentally, in March 2007, this radio cost me $15.44 plus shipping. I guess the increased cost is to cover its new "antique" status.

Pros: Solidly constructed, excellent reception, built-in AC cord (no seperate wall wart required), decent volume, long battery life, wonderful value for the money.
Cons: At this price? Seriously, you are joking, right?
I was given this radio (at my request) as a "birthday appliance" by my wife. I use it primarily to listen to NPR. Here in Honolulu, our public radio station is located fairly close to a 50 KW "rocker/rapper" station (both in frequency and distance). My other portable (Panasonic) does not have the selectivity to receive NPR clearly. This little radio does just fine.
Additionally, the TV bands work well in my location - - - so at least I can listen to Hagure Keiji (my favorite Nipponese drama) on KIKU-TV when I am away from home and cannot watch the television.
Being an analog vice digital receiver promises long battery life from a set of 4 AA's, so this is a radio that should prove very useful during hurricane season.
While this radio will not reproduce "audiophile" quality sound, the sound it does produce is clear and crisp. Certainly it is sufficient to the task of keeping you up to date while on the go.
This is truly a 5-star item at a 2-star price! I (and judging by the review ratings) and a lot of other folks highly recommend it.

This radio is compact and sounds very good to a guy who has over 12000 hours of flying time.Yes, I am completely deaf in the high freqs. But the radio continuely drifts off frequency which is annoying at best. Because of this one fault I could not recommend this unit to anyone.Digital camera Review: Competent Radio

While this radio is not a great radio, it is competent for the task at hand. I compared its AM/FM performance against a Sony analog Walkman, which has surprisingly good performance. As expected, this radio was better than the Walkman, but not a great deal better. I also checked the TV bands against the known local stations and all of the local stations came in fine. The weather band also worked fine. The downsides are that the radio is best used for voice, since its sole speaker is not great. I wish its AM performance were better than average, but it is just average. It has some difficulty with strong station rejection. You will find spots on the FM dial where two or more stations combine in places they do not belong. For the price, a worthwhile purchase. It is better than Radio Shack products.
