Digital camera Review: A Worthwhile Clock Radio Upgrade for Some I Phone/I Pod Users

Wanted to de-clutter my nightstand and this unit does that by replacing my 15 year old clock radio with a narrower unit that has better sound, a better radio tuner plus extra capabilities, and gets rid of the phone charger cord for my I Phone 3GS.
This unit is not fully intuitive to set up and has some controls on the back with the typical hard to read labels. However, once set up operation is simple with all the necessary use controls on the front, side or top. Couldn't get presets to work but they are of no use to me anyway - I leave it on NPR and the remote works well for fast changes, probably close to as fast as finding the correct preset.
The clock is auto set and auto daylight savings- all you need to do is select the time zone (I believe but haven't tested that it has the "new" DST dates re the change of a few years ago that obsoleted a lot of the older "built in DST date" clocks of Asian manufacture.) It comes set for Eastern time with a backup CR 2032 battery installed. Clock is intensity adjustable and I leave it on the lowest setting- the others are too bright for night use and the lowest is a bit dim for day so an adjustable auto dimmer would have been a better design choice.
Sound is very good for a one speaker compact and much better than my old one. Fairly typical "Sony mellow" with slightly boosted base to make up for small speaker size. I've got a full surround system in my bedroom for serious stuff and don't want to use that system's tuner to wake or need that type of quality in a clock radio.
The radio is a better than average design compromise for inexpensive circuits. If you have adjacent frequency high power stations nearby and want to wake to a more distant weaker signal, you may encounter tuning issues as time of day changes, etc. Takes a full superhet circuit with good bandwidth filters to avoid that problem (like in a GE Superradio or a shortwave set) so don't expect it at this price point. The remote allows setting EVEN NUMBER FM and ODD NUMBER FM frequencies and the last time I looked FM stations were ODD NUMBER frequencies. ???? A possible confusion point with no utility??
Charger works well and is adequately built but putting a device on it shuts off the radio if it is playing.
The two alarms have 3 choices that match most phones - every day, weekdays, or weekends only.
Remote runs on a CR 2025 battery. I don't understand the logic of using a different battery in the remote and as a clock backup - somewhat inconvenient for most I suspect though it doesn't bother me because I store lots of all common battery sizes in my fridge. The remote is the only practical to tune the radio- the other control is a rocker on the rear panel and you will surely hit something else if you reach for it blind.
AM antenna is a coil and necessary for reception. Discovered that it slips nicely between my bed frame and mattress so is both out of view and out of the way. FM antenna is the usual short wire out the back. The AM works well enough for talk radio junkies and sports fans...

Sleep timer is on top and the (alarm) off button is in the front at 3 o'clock. Alarm A and Alarm B controls are on the left and right side and the display clearly shows which (if any) are set. Both can be set so if you use one time for weekdays and another for weekends, you can set both and just leave them. Or you can just set one using one of the three options noted above.
Despite the somewhat fiddly set up, I like this unit. It will serve well as the "upgrade" I wanted.
Note that I have not evaluated (or even tried) the I Phone wakeup or other I Phone / IPod properties of this unit because I do not use my I Phone for music and purchased this item for its charger feature. I despise 12 bit sound quality and never listen to MP3s or other ultra-compressed music formats.
