Digital camera Review: A FABULOUS RADIO

When home, I have the radio on a lot of the day, mainly talk radio. I bought 2 of this radio in August 2000 (yes, three zeros) and they bit the dust in late 2007. I got about 7 years of EXCELLENT performance from these radios. I have 2 because one sits on bathroom sink and goes back & forth from bedroom to bathroom while getting dressed. The other goes between kitchen and office constantly. There's 5 presets for AM. I wish there were more. There's 10 presets for FM. One used to be for Howard until he left (a huge Howard fan here who has not gone Sirius) and now I basically only use one for WCBS-FM (when they got smart and realized, in the immortal words of NY Daily News, that they didn't know jack), and the others go unused. The TV channel part of this radio, I never use and couldn't comment.
The radio is excellent. The controls are responsive, the battery life is very decent, and most importantly, the reception is excellent.
The reason my radios now need to be replaced (I just ordered one from Amazon and will try the Sangean for the second) is that the top of the radio is covered in plastic. After 7 years of pressing the on/off button I'm sure thousands of times, the plastic over the on/off button ate through. The on/off button needs that plastic over it to work!! The damn thing won't turn on/off now!! I tried turning the volume down to zero to "turn it off" but the batteries do wear out and it's annoying.
So I figure that 7 years of constant usage is pretty good and I am not complaining and have even come back for more!
In spite of the 7-year life, I still give this radio the highest rating. Fair is fair, right? Can't complain about 7 years of perfect performance, can we? I say no.

This is an amazing shower radio. I use it every day and it has always worked perfectly. It resists water well, has great sound quality, and gets great reception. I was amazed at the reception this radio gets. Sometimes the antenna doesn't pick up every channel, but the suction cup on the top of the antenna lets you move it anywhere very easily. The speaker goes very loud and it does not need to be turned up very loudly to hear it over the water. The clarity is also very good. The batteries also last an extremely long time. I really like my Sony ICF-S79V shower radio because it has marvelous reception! The sound is clear and there's no static. I like that the on/off and tuning buttons are on the top of the radio because it's easy to reach up a push them rather than fiddle with buttons on the front of the radio. One push and I'm on my favorite music station, and then with another push I can get the latest traffic from the "all news" station. I don't use the television sound band but I tried it and the reception is just as clear as the other bands. The weather radio is a nice touch and I have found it handy when there is stormy weather coming. Also, the large volume knob makes it easy to adjust the volume with soapy hands especially when you need to know if the phone is ringing or if there's someone at the front door.
The only thing wrong with this radio is that it is not water proof, just water resistant. That sounds kind of weird for a "SHOWER RADIO" but that's what the instructions say. The radio should not be exposed to direct water spray. Luckily for me I have a shelf in my shower that doesn't get sprayed with water and that's where I have the radio. I would definitely buy this radio again.

Our family loves this radio. This is the second one I've bought. The kids kept taking ours out of our bathroom, so I got them one. I have had the original one for at least three or four years. The buttons are starting to peel off. I don't know if that will affect the quality of the radio--it's been like that for about a year, but so far, so good. I would recommend this Sony over any other brand for quality and especially for ease of use. (I've tried other brands and have returned them). My cheap shower radio finally failed and I was in need of a replacement. I took the chance to significantly upgrade on this radio and it has been worth every penny! I love the reception, the sound quality, and convenience of use. The pre-set buttons are wonderful so I can easily switch between channels. I especially like the count-down timer which automatically turns off the radio after the time period I select.
