JUST GOT MY ICF-38. HAD IT A FEW DAYS AND NIGHTS. VERY GOOD AM PERFORMANCE. DECENT FM. EXCEPT FOR NPR I DON'T LISTEN TO FM MUCH...
I STOOD ON THE FRONT PORCH THIS MORNING LISTENING TO A SOUTH EAST ASIAN STATION! I CAN HEAR A LOT OF OKLAHOMA LOW POWER (10KW DAY TIME) STATIONS. DALLAS/FT WORTH 50KW COULD BE HEARD AFTER SUNRISE! A LOT OF 50KW BIG CITY STATIONS LAST NIGHT.
IF YOU ARE HAVING AM RECEPTION PROBLEMS TURN OFF ALL YOUR COMPACT FLORESCENT LIGHTS AND YOUR COMPUTERS. THEY ARE MINI RADIO STATIONS. LOTS OF INTERFERENCE FROM THEM. YOUR AC POWER LINES OUTSIDE CAN BE A SOURCE OF 60 CYCLE BUZZ TOO.
VERY NICE FIT/FINISH. SMOOTH LIQUID FEELING CONTROLS. A VARIABLE CAPACITOR TUNING SETUP. NO DIGITAL ANYTHING HERE...
FOUR AA CELLS FOR POWER OR PLUG IT IN TO 120VAC. NO JACK FOR EXTERNAL 6VDC. RATS!
MUCH BIGGER THAN I THOUGHT SO HAS DECENT SOUND.

I was looking for your basic AM/FM radio without any perks and was surprised at how hard it was to find one in stores. Most offered more elaborate and expensives units than I was looking for. This radio was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Its a no frils unit that does exactly what I wanted: it gets great reception, is durable and easy to use, and sounds decent enough. We like it so much we are ordering a second to replace the boombox that resides in our bathroom. With all the fancy stereos in my house, I find myself using this radio the most. The reception and sound are great for a radio this size, and because it's light and has batteries, I can carry it from room to room, wherever I need it. This is an excellent portable radio. I liked it so much, I purchased a second one just like it. The sound is good, the reception is excellent (almost as good as my car radio), and it is easy to use and to carry about. I've only had it about a month so I can't evaluate durability or the battery life, but I have used it a lot (I listen to all the LSU baseball games) and everything is still working perfectly.Digital camera Review: An Excellent Value

With the hurricane season approaching, we needed to replace our old portable radio. This Sony AM/FM met all the requirements: reasonable price, great sound, battery or plug-in operation. When my husband saw the radio, he asked how much it was and guessed it was at least $50. He was very surprised and pleased with the actual cost. A really excellent value, and a Sony!
