Digital camera reviews of Sony ICFS79W AM/FM/Weather Band Digital Tuner Shower Radio (White)Digital camera Review: Best portable radio ever Summary: 5 Stars
I love this radio! We own 2, and I'm about to buy 2 more - one more for our home and one for a gift. I keep one with my gardening tools and carry it around with me and listen while gardening. The others travel between the bathrooms and bedrooms. Good sound quality, takes dirt and water abuse, and the preset buttons are great for a portable radio. No playing around trying to tune in favorite stations. The batteries seem to last forever (I don't even know what kind they take, since I've never changed them and we've had our 2 units for years). So the time is always right, even with the occasional power outs we have in our area, which messes up all the plug in radio times. The best portable radio ever!
Digital camera Review: Better than others but it is still just a shower radio Summary: 4 Stars
The Sony ICFS79W shower radio has several nice features and the reception is actually good. I bought it to replace a similar but lower-end brand item that just couldn't tune much of anything in and when it did it sounded like the Campbell's soup tin telephones we used when I was a kid so I did get a little excited just because it tuned in my stations!
One of the features I like best is the count down timer; You can press the Power-On button more than once to set the runtime. You can go from 60 min. down to 10 min. This really helps me on days I need to get out of the house in a hurry, plus it probably will save a ton on batteries. The antenna also has a small suction cup that sticks to the walls of my shower enclosure and allows me to adjust for best reception but it really doesn't matter cause it picks up everything in the Chicago area. I could see it working well for others that need to work on the signal. The package also included the usual small rope hanger for around the shower pipe. This does hold the radio above most of the spray so the speaker stays dry for me. I also try to conserve water by turning off while soaping up and running it at only half volume so the spray doesn't go far anyway. Others will probably spray more than I do.
On the Downside, the speaker (1, uno, singular) does not sound fantastic but it is, after all, a shower "radio" not a shower surround sound. It could definitely use a little sumpin' in the sound department but for listening to some weather, traffic and background music it is actually pretty decent. If it had a mini Bose Wave guide built into it it might thump a little better base when needed.
Bottom Dollar: There are other radios that get good reviews but I liked the $50 price tag. Others run 50% - 75% higher and I wasn't crazy about the designs of the others. This one looks and fits like it was designed to be a "shower radio". The others seem to look more like desktops that have been miniaturized. Either way the Sony works well and fits perfect for me and I saved $30 or $40. I recommend it but you need to take it at face value and just don't expect surround sound.
Digital camera Review: Buy It........You'll Like it! Summary: 5 Stars
We bought our first Sony Shower Radio in September, 2007. Right from the start we enjoyed the sound and clarity of the broadcasts and knew we wanted another one. I finally got around to ordering the second one recently. By the way...we are still using the original batteries that we put in the first one a year ago.. and it is used every day. It's a great little radio!
Digital camera Review: Can't beat it Summary: 5 Stars
Nothing negative to say about this little radio. Does exactly what it says it will do. The C size batteries are less common now, it is true, but the pay-off is in the life. I can't remember the last time we changed them or if indeed we ever have in the year and a half we've owned this radio. Having a clock in the shower is nice too. For me, this radio was a prime example of getting what you pay for.
Digital camera Review: Cheap Top Panel Summary: 2 Stars
We purchased two of these units. We liked everything about them, except that the top control panel is covered with some very cheap plastic, which in both cases disintegrated, allowed water to leak in, and eventually the performance of some of the controls degraded significantly. Too bad, if Sony had not gone so cheap on the lid, this could have been a really great unit.
