Digital camera reviews of Sony MDR-NC50 Noise Canceling HeadphonesDigital camera Review: Headphones are excellent Summary: 5 Stars
Sony headphones work very well. Sound is excellent and noise reduction is very good. Walking between the Bose store and the Sony store to try out the two headphones, I could not tell any difference.
Digital camera Review: Hideous howling feedback gets worse over time, BUY BOSE!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I waited long enough that I'm out of warranty so I smashed the stupid things over a tree. I feel better now. Seriously, whatever noise there is hurts less than the howling.
Digital camera Review: How Much Noise Did I Expect To Get Canceled? Summary: 3 Stars
I've never owned another product like this, so I had no idea what to expect. I did a spec comparison with the similar product from Bose and for half the price, decided to give the Sony a shot. It does reduce ambient noise, esp. in cars and planes, but of course it doesn't cancel out all of it. It works well enough to be worth a try, but if I want no noise and no music, I'll use earplugs. I'm keeping them.
Digital camera Review: Howling Feedback = Awful product Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased these headphones around December, discounting the scattered comments about feedback. That was a mistake.
I've taken these headphones on two airplane trips, and tried new batteries and a variety of head positions. Result is the same -- whistling that grows quickly into howling in one ear (the left one in my experience; the one the cord connects to). Covering the earcup with one hand makes the sound significantly louder. Only remedy is turning off the noise cancellation. The feedback is really ear-splitting. Not a minor annoyance, but a real yowl.
I've seen no evidence from the other posts that this is a quality control issue, so I'm assuming it's a basic design problem. Save yourself the grief.
Digital camera Review: I Love This! Summary: 5 Stars
My greatest pair of headphones! First the pros. Extremely rich sound, the sound separation is excellent; there is a very rich and natural bass too; not the pounding type of bass you get from those in-ear type earphones. Try this with Madonna's "Holiday" or Toto's "Africa", or some classical piece, you will hear every instrument. I am also saying this partly because it is so much more affordable than BOSE's quietcomfort 2 & 3, half the price! Ok, the cons now. First, they are over the ear type and thus they are really huge and bulky (but it has a decent travel pouch). You must use the noise canceling function, otherwise, my $30 MDR71 can beat this giant flat in terms of sound quality; so if you are using NC50 for your long flights, make sure you have a spare AAA battery for the headset (yes, NC headphones need extra battery for the headset). Also, there is a subtle buzz sound once the noise canceling sound kicks in, may not be that bad if your source is clear. Lastly, this headset needs to be driven hard to perform, meaning, the vol on your MP3 will have to be turned on really loud. In fact, I bought a new MP3 player just to optimize this headphones... I am not sure if the IPODS can drive this giant, can anyone care to advice?
