Digital camera reviews of Sony MDR-NC50 Noise Canceling Headphones

Digital camera Review: Best price for perfect Sony quality
Summary: 5 Stars

The Sony MDR-NC50 has fulfilled all my exspectations.
Sound and comfort are absolutely perfect to me.

Be aware on every noise reduction product (either Bose or Sennheiser): You should never use noise reduction if noise frequency change up and down rapidly - the physical priciple is always the same: the headphones creates a sound with an opposite wave to the surround sounds ... unfortunately it is a reacting and therefore an inert system compared to the sensitivity of human ears. For that I think it's just better in general to have a closed system (like NC-50 oder Brose-II).
For noises with nearly constant frequency (on a flight, in a car,...) it is absolutely beautifull sound for smooth (Jazz, Classic) as well as for heavy (Rock) music - it's more hollow but you cannot cancel physical laws. The noise reduction mechanism cannot be separated completely from the music you like to hear because on the other hand you want to have a light weight product.

Over all: Full recommendation for the Sony with a reasonable price compared to some others.

Digital camera Review: Better VALUE than Bose
Summary: 4 Stars

OK, 4 stars, not 5...

The Bose, hands down, get 5 stars (I had a pair for the 30 day trial) and they were incredible. I could listen to very soft classical music on noisy turbo prop planes.

These Sony's are a better VALUE since they are 1/2 the price and the Noise Cancellation is, in my opinion, equal to that of the Bose. The sound quality, however, is not equal. It is not horrible either. I am NOT an audiophile, but could discern a difference in sound level and quality between the two.

I had no problems wearing these on a cross-country flight (NH - CA with one stop). I wore them for the entire flight (each leg) and they were very comfortable. I slept well with them on too (they didn't prevent me from sleeping).

The Monitor button on the Left ear cup on the Sony is great. You don't have to remove the headphones while on the plane to hear the Stewardess ask if you want that teeny tiny bag of chex.

In short, if you ARE an audiophile and simply cannot skimp on sound quality (and don't care about the price) go with the Bose. If you are like the rest of us, go with the Sonys.

Digital camera Review: Better than BOSE qc2
Summary: 5 Stars

After a deep reaserach, I have found a refubished pair of nc50 for only 120 dollars, I have comparated to the bose one, I can say that the noise cancel feature is the same, both reduce the low sounds very well. The sound quality in my opinion is a little bit better for the Sony one! yes, it's true! the bose qc2 has a bass boost that gives to the music a innatural boost on the low sounds, the only cons thing about the sony nc50 is that also at the maximum volume the sound is not so high for your ears.
Anyway I think this is the best noise canceling headset in the market, I love bose stuff but the headset qc2 is not good as a lot people claims.
In addcition the design and the confort of the sony hs is amazing, a perfect choise for a psp or a black nano ipod, very well done sony!

Digital camera Review: Bose is still the better one!
Summary: 3 Stars

Well, after much research I bought Sony. I travel in plane almost every week. Noise cancelling feature works well. But music sounds a bit lacking in depth. I compared it with Bose QC2 (from my co-wroker), music sounds much better with Bose, better depth. Weight wise Bose is a bit lighter too, makes a difference when wearing the headphone on long overseas flights.

Bottom line is Bose is better, but if it is worth paying $299 + shipping I'm not so sure. I think for about $110 Sony MDR-NC50 is a better value for money. But if money is no object for you then go with Bose if you are looking to get a noise canceling headphone to take in the plane.

One more thing, I noticed a screeching metalic noise after wearing the headphone for a while with noise reduction feture turned on. This is a bit annoying, but it usually go away after readjusting the connection between the headphone and the wire going to the sound source. I plan to take this up with Sony though.

Digital camera Review: Cancels noise...but cancels quality!
Summary: 2 Stars

I debated hard about purchasing these phones after reading all the reviews. Now I have to decide about sending them back. The noise canceling works very well and I will try them on a plane. But the quality of audio is very poor. Bass distorts and treble cracks. At low volume, they're not bad....but I like to crank 'em up and these headphone just wont cut it. I will purchase another pair that are designed just for listening.
