Digital camera reviews of Sony MDR-NC50 Noise Canceling Headphones

Digital camera Review: FANTASTIC
Summary: 5 Stars

I LOVE these headphones. With the noise canceling turned on the sound quality is superb and rich. I even use these with out music and just turn the noise canceling on so I can work without distractions. Can't wait to see how the hold up on planes.

Digital camera Review: Fantastic gift!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I received these noise-canceling headphones for Mother's Day (don't worry, I had asked for them!) They are great! I wanted them so I could listen to my mp3 player while I rode the lawn mower. We have 4 acres, and although I love to mow the lawn (catching some sun, while doing chores...what could be better?) I love to be able to listen to music while mowing....without having a headache afterwards from my music turned up too loud so I could hear it over the sound of the mower.

These headphones worked even better than I could have hoped. I even had my mp3 player turned down lower than if I was listening to it in the house! I highly recommend these headphones!

Digital camera Review: Fantastic noise cancelling and fit, lacking sound quality for the price
Summary: 3 Stars

If you're looking for comfortable headphones to cancel outside noise, these are fantastic.

If you're looking for that plus excellent sound quality, these are lacking. Oddly enough, I found the Sony MDR-NC6 to have much better sound quality (not noise cancelling or fit though).

Good
- Fits well, even with guy sized ears.
- Fantastic job of blocking outside noise

Bad
- My $30 Target headphones have the same sound quality. It's not horrible, but it's defititely lacking something compared to really good headphones. And for this price it's just silly. And to top it all off - Sony makes a pair that has great sound quality (the MDR-NC6). Why couldn't they copy those? *sigh*

Digital camera Review: Flawed headphones
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought these headphones because there were many good reviews on the internet, but i have experienced the same problems as some other users:

The noise canceling function works for about 15 minutes, and then a loud screeching feedback noise starts to get louder and louder. The noise becomes so loud that it is unbearable and on every occasion I have used the headphones I have had to turn off the noise canceling function and continue to use them with the n/c off.

Turning the n/c off and on again doesnt work, and repositioning the headphones (as the manual says to do) doesn't work either.

Without the noise canceling function, the headphones are inferior to many much cheaper models, and the sound in these headphones is nowhere near top quality.

So much for sony quality...

Digital camera Review: Fundamentally flawed. Just suck it up and buy Bose.
Summary: 1 Stars

OK, so I'm not the spring chicken I used to be. Perhaps its those long nights with the stereo turned up to "11", but my hearing just isn't what it used to be. I can no longer hear the 15K flyback hum in my TV, the very subtle high frequency slide in Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother "If" is long gone. The bottom line is I couldn't justify spending Bose money on something I couldn't hear anyway. How bad can these be?

Big Mistake.

The fundamental flaw with these headphones is the feedback whistle in the right ear. If they are not mounted on my head JUST SO, I get this feedback just in the right ear. OK, so you think, just adjust the headphones so it doesn't happen. This is both surprisingly difficult and also not effective because the noise canceling is always on the edge of instability (i.e. feedback) and this has a distinctive frequency response hump right where you don't want it. The effect is if you had a 32 channel equalizer and you simply pegged the setting around 400 Hz.

Aside from the feedback whistle, the sound of these is just "muddy".

Or so I now understand. I finally broke down and bought the Bose QC2.

Wow.

No feedback, they are comfortable, they do a reasonably effective job of blocking out external high frequency sounds, and the crispness of the sound is remarkable, even to my old failing hearing. You can use NiMH rechargeable batteries so the care and feeding costs are low.

So while the Bose 'phones are expensive, they are even more expensive when you waste $150 (what I paid some time ago) on these headphones first...

Sometimes you really do get what you pay for.
